After a forced sabbatical of two years, the most awaited theatre festival of Mumbai is back. Shirin Mehrotra gives you a list of must watch at Prithvi Festival this year.

Mumbai?s iconic theatre, which was shut for renovation for a while, is coming back with a bang. Despite the lack of sponsors, Prithvi theatre has brought back the famous Prithvi Festival after two years. Some of Mumbai?s most famous theatre groups including Ekjute, Motley and Ansh have come together to make it successful. The 16-day festival, which starts on November 3rd, has a line-up of 21 plays by the theatre groups that regularly perform at Prithvi. If you haven?t seen the best of their works yet, it?s a good time to catch up on them. Here?s a list of our favourite picks that we wouldn?t want to miss.

A Walk In The Woods
Motley?s leading actress and one of the most loved theatre personalities Ratna Pathak Shah gets behind the stage for the first time with her directorial debut A Walk In The Woods. Based on Lee Blessing?s original play by the same name the Indian version is about two diplomats from India and Pakistan who meet in Geneva and discuss the proposal to solve the peace problem between the two countries while taking a walk in the woods. Watch it for two of the best actors on Indian theatre scene; Naseeruddin Shah and Rajit Kapur.

Begum Jaan
Javed Siddiqui?s comic tragedy Begum Jaan is about a yesteryear classical singer and her relation with her daughter and a journalist. Take a trip to the pre-independent India through Begum Jaan?s narration of the events of her younger days. Watch it for the theatre legend Nadira Babbar?s awe-inspiring performance.

Aaj Rang Hai
Set in Madhya Pradesh, the play is about a Baithak singer who starts counselling her neighbours after retiring from singing. The play laced with Hazrat Amir Khusro?s philosophy and poetry, performed by the traditional qawwals of Lucknow.

Kaifi Aur Main
This one is a celebration of famous Urdu poet and lyricist Kaifi Azmi presented by his daughter Shabana Azmi. Along with her husband Javed Akhtar, they portray the couple, her mother Shaukat Azmi and father Kaifi Azmi. Watch it if Urdu poetry is music to your years and for Shabana Azmi who is always a treat to watch.

The new addition to the festival comes in the form of Acoustic Sunday Jam where artists like Taufiq Qureshi, Niladri Kumar and Gino Banks will perform live. The Prithvi Festival will close with a Carnival Show featuring performances by the likes of Naseeruddin Shah, Benjamin Gilani, Makrand Deshpande and Purva Naresh.
