Easton honors two-time NCAA wrestling champ Jordan Oliver with parade

Hundreds gathered today at Easton's Centre Square to welcome home the city's two-time collegiate wrestling champion.

NCAA wrestling champ and former Easton Area High School wrestling standout Jordan Oliver was greeted by a crowd of roughly 200 people celebrating his latest victory. Oliver this past spring had capped a 126-6 career record at Oklahoma State University by winning his second national championship.

He also holds the Oklahoma State record for the most wins by pins, breaking a mark set in 1981.

Supporters wore white T-shirts featuring his photo and the words, "That Dude Jo, 2X National Champion, Jordan Oliver, Oklahoma State Wrestling," which Oliver later autographed.

The celebration started with a parade from the former Perkins restaurant lot and proceeded to the circle. Marching in the parade were members of Easton Saints Wrestling, carrying a banner "2X NCAA Champion." Oliver arrived with his mother, Tina Rosado, and other family members in an Easton Ambassadors cart.

"I couldn't put into words how grateful I am to the community. I appreciate all the love and support he gets from the city of Easton," Rosado said when reached by phone. "And how proud I am of my son on and off the mat."

Mayor Sal Panto Jr. said the first thing Oliver said to him when he greeted the mayor was "It's nice to be home."

Jordan Oliver celebrated in downtown Easton on June 30, 2013 Easton Area High School graduate and two-time NCAA wrestling champion Jordan Oliver was celebrated with a parade and ceremony Sunday afternoon at Centre Square in Easton. Oliver won his second NCAA Division I wrestling championship with Oklahoma State this past March during the championships held in Des Moines, Iowa. "That's the type of person he is. He's glad to be home," Panto said.

Panto then declared June 30 "Jordan Oliver Day" and said he wouldn't give him a key to the city because that key doesn't open anything, but a proclamation he handed over to Oliver would be the "key to our hearts."

This was the second parade for Oliver. In April 2011, he also was recognized in a city celebration when as an Oklahoma State sophomore he won the 133-pound title in Philadelphia.

"In 14 years, I've only given away a couple days," Panto said. "I don't know anyone whose been given two days."

Oliver after accepting the proclamation said, "It's a privilege to have just one Jordan Oliver Day in Easton, where I am from. But now, I got two. I think I'm going to keep winning and stringing along a whole month."

He went on to thank his family and supporters, both past and present, and said he's focused on winning his dream medals: World and Olympic gold. He had come up short earlier this month in his quest to earn the 66 kg (145.5 pounds) spot at the U.S. World Team Trials at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

"You got to get knocked down to get back up again," Oliver said.

Steve Powell, Oliver's wrestling coach at Easton Area High School, said it takes a village to raise a child.

"Today, Easton is very proud of Jordan Oliver -- our child," he said, noting the reason the wrestling program is so successful is because of people like Oliver who return to say "thanks" and contribute. "He's a two-time national champion because he had a phenomenal attitude."

Easton Saints Wrestling coach Dave Swick also called Oliver an "inspiration," noting he watched him from his first day on the mat until now.

Dave and Tammy Richmond, of Easton, turned out to support Oliver. The couple's son, Sean Richmond, had wrestled at Easton when Oliver was at the school and they said they watched him grow up.

"Jordan really deserves it because he worked very hard for this," Tammy Richmond said. "We support him all the way."

Kathy Wagner's son, William Wagner, 12, a wrestler with the Easton Saints, had marched in the parade. The Easton resident said Oliver is a role model for the youngsters.

"He worked hard to get where he is," she said. "It's nice to give him that recognition."

(AP) ? Kenny Perry tried not to get ahead of himself Sunday on the 18th tee at the Senior Players Championship. He knew all too well how quickly fortunes can change on golf's biggest stages.

There was the devastation at the PGA Championship in 1996. Disaster at the Masters in 2009. Disappointment at the Senior PGA last month.

If there was a way to lose a major tournament, the affable 52-year-old Kentuckian seemed to have found it during his otherwise sterling career.

"I thought I was snakebit," Perry said. "I got close so many times and I just seemed to mess up down the homestretch and not make it happen."

This time, Perry didn't leave anything to chance.

After tap-in birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 gave him a two-shot lead over Fred Couples, Perry made par on the No. 18 to close a spectacular weekend at Fox Chapel. His bogey-free 6-under 64 left him at 19-under 261, two shots ahead of Fred Couples and Duffy Waldorf.

"My word was patience," Perry said. "I wasn't going to put any pressure on myself to win the golf tournament because I had so much heartache, so many losses. ... I was just thinking 'You know what, I'm tired of worrying about that.'"

Instead of feeling the pressure, Perry exerted it. He withstood an early charge from Waldorf, who birdied his first four holes, then kept firing at pins on the back nine while Couples' putter failed him.

The Hall of Famer leads the Champions Tour in putting average but could generate little magic Sunday. He drove the green on the short par-4 seventh only to three-putt for par. Couples later knocked it within 8 feet on the 15th only to send his birdie attempt streaking past the hole. He pulled the comebacker to the left and the bogey gave Perry his opening.

Perry stuffed a pitching wedge within inches on the 16th then hit a 6-iron to within 2 feet on the par-3 17th. He tapped in the birdie to maintain his two-stroke lead then played smartly on the 18th. He left it just short of the green in two and watched as Waldorf and Couples both reached the long par-5. Their long eagle attempts never sniffed the cup, and when Perry rolled in his par putt, he thrust the ball in the air just before the sky opened for one last deluge on the water-logged course.

Fox Chapel took on more than 4 inches of rain during the week, turning what was supposed to be a stiff test into a pitch and putt for long hitters like Couples and Perry. The conditions begged for players to attack the pins. Rather than simply protect par as he did during his near-misses in earlier majors, Perry knew he could go for it.

It paid off with a $405,000 check and one very significant weight off his shoulders.

"I'm hoping the floodgates are going to open," Perry said. "But I don't know, anytime you get into contention you get nervous, you get antsy. But today I had a peace about me ... if I can kind of draw upon this the next time I get into the heat of things hopefully I'll finish it off like I did today."

Couples was hoping to polish off his third major victory on the Champions Tour, but after cruising through the first three rounds he couldn't match Perry's shotmaking on the final day. Couples now has four runner-up finishes this season, including each of the last two majors.

"There were a couple shots you always should have back," Couples said. "The putt on (15) looked so easy and I just hammered it and I kind of flinched at it coming down the hill ... it was a little bit of a sour day the way I played after I teed off."

Perry trailed by as many as eight shots earlier in the tournament before tracking down Couples over the weekend. He drew within two thanks to consecutive 63s in the second and third rounds and kept it going Sunday.

It was sweet vindication for a player who has won more than $31 million during his 31-year career but is better known for those rounds that went all wrong.

Perry led Mark Brooks by a shot at the 1996 PGA Tournament at Valhalla just outside Louisville, about two hours north of his hometown of Franklin, Ky., only to bogey the final hole to fall into a playoff with Mark Brooks. Brooks birdied the first extra hole for the victory.

The agony grew exponentially 13 years later, when he stood on the 17th tee at Augusta with a two-shot lead. Consecutive bogeys dropped Perry into a three-way tie with Angel Cabrera and Chad Campbell. He failed to get up and down on No. 10, the second playoff hole, and Cabrera made par to capture the green jacket.

Perry had another close call at the Senior PGA in May. He led through three rounds at Bellerive in St. Louis but was dogged by knee pain and overtaken by unheralded Kohki Idoki.

On Sunday, there would be no folding.

Buoyed by a hot putter, Perry teamed with Waldorf to wear down Couples.

Waldorf began the day four strokes behind Couples but wasted little time making up ground. He rattled off four straight birdies to start his round and shot 29 on the front nine. He cooled off after making the turn and finished with a 6-under 64, giving Perry enough room to pull away.

"It's not surprising, (Perry) is obviously a great player," Waldorf said. "Winning these majors isn't easy and he did a great job this week."

Michael Allen and first-round leader John Huston tied for fourth at 12 under. Colin Montgomerie, playing in his first Champions Tour event, closed with a 65 to tie for ninth.

Everyone Who Records Video on Their Phone Needs to Follow This Rule

I understand that when you take a picture or video with your phone, it makes a lot of sense to hold your phone upright. It's more comfortable! It's totally natural! And though Instagram has helped fix portrait mode pictures by squaring them off, we still haven't solved the portrait video problem. It's awful to watch videos like that. Everyone who does it is just a bunch of scrubs.

Obama clashes with African host over gay rights

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Thursday praised the Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage as a "victory for American democracy" but clashed with his African host over gay rights in a sign of how far the movement has to go internationally.

Obama said recognition of gay unions in the United States should cross state lines and that equal rights should be recognized universally. It was his first chance to expand on his thoughts about the ruling, which was issued Wednesday as he flew to Senegal, one of many African countries that outlaw homosexuality.

Senegalese President Macky Sall rebuffed Obama's call for Africans to give gays equal rights under the law.

"We are still not ready to decriminalize homosexuality," Sall said, while insisting that the country is "very tolerant" and needs more time to digest the issue without pressure. "This does not mean we are homophobic."

Obama said gay rights didn't come up in their private meeting at the presidential palace, a mansion that looks somewhat similar to the White House. But Obama said he wants to send a message to Africans that while he respects differing personal and religious views on the matter, it's important to have nondiscrimination under the law.

"People should be treated equally, and that's a principle that I think applies universally," he said.

A report released Monday by Amnesty International says 38 African countries criminalize homosexuality. In four of those ? Mauritania, northern Nigeria, southern Somalia and Sudan ? the punishment is death. These laws appear to have broad public support. A June 4 Pew Research Center survey found at least nine of 10 respondents in Senegal, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria believe homosexuality should not be accepted by society.

Papi Nbodj, a 19-year-old student who stood by the road to the presidential palace to see Obama's arrival, said homosexuality is against the religious beliefs of most in Senegal.

"We are in a Muslim country, so we certainly cannot have it here," he said. "And for me it's not OK to have this anywhere in the world."

Sall sought to reassure Obama that gays are not persecuted in Senegal. But under Senegalese law, "an improper or unnatural act with a person of the same sex" can be punished by up to five years in prison.

Ndeye Kebe, president of a human rights organization that works with homosexuals called Women's Smile, disputed Sall's contention that gays are not discriminated against.

"I know of around a dozen people who are in prison for homosexuality as we speak," she said. "There wasn't any real proof against them, but they were found guilty and they are in prison."

And as recently as February of 2008, police rounded up men suspected of being homosexual after a Senegalese tabloid published photographs of a clandestine gay wedding in a suburb of Dakar. Gays went into hiding or fled to neighboring countries, but they were pushed out of Gambia by the president's threat of decapitation.

As for Wednesday's court ruling, Obama said he's directing his administration to comb through every federal statute to quickly determine the implications of a decision that gave the nation's legally married gay couples equal federal footing with all other married Americans.

He said he wants to make sure that gay couples who deserve benefits under the ruling get them quickly. Obama said he personally believes that gay couples legally married in one state should retain their benefits if they move to another state that doesn't recognize gay marriage.

"I believe at the root of who we are as a people, as Americans, is the basic precept that we are all equal under the law," he said. "We believe in basic fairness. And what I think yesterday's ruling signifies is one more step towards ensuring that those basic principles apply to everybody."

Obama also offered prayers for former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is gravely ill, ahead of Obama's planned visit to his country this weekend. Obama said he was inspired to become political active by Mandela's example in the anti-apartheid movement of being willing to sacrifice his life for a belief in equal treatment.

"I think he's a hero for the world," Obama said. "And if and when he passes from this place, one thing I think we'll all know is that his legacy is one that will linger on throughout the ages."

Hundreds awaited Obama behind barricades later at Goree Island on Africa's westernmost point, where Africans were said to be have been shipped off into slavery across the Atlantic Ocean. Obama peered out at the crashing waves through the island's "Door of No Return," at first by himself and later joined by his wife, Michelle, and two daughters. Emerging minutes later, Obama said the site painted a powerful picture of the magnitude of the slave trade as he reflected on the ties many in the U.S. share with the continent.

"For an African-American, an African-American president, to be able to visit this site gives me even greater motivation in terms of human rights around the world," he said.

Obama's focus in Senegal is on the modern-day achievements of the former French colony after half a century of independence. Sall ousted an incumbent who attempted to change the constitution to make it easier for him to be re-elected and pave the way for his son to succeed him. The power grab sparked protests, fueled by hip-hop music and social media, that led to Sall's election.

"Senegal is one of the most stable democracies in Africa and one of the strongest partners that we have in the region," Obama said. "It's moving in the right direction with reforms to deepen democratic institutions."

But such people-powered democratic transitions are not always the story of the African experience. Fighting and human rights abuses limited Obama's options for stops in his first major tour of sub-Saharan Africa since he took office more than four years ago. Obama is avoiding his father's homeland, Kenya, whose president has been charged with war crimes, and Nigeria, the country with the continent's most dominant economy. Nigeria is enveloped in an Islamist insurgency and military crackdown.

Obama's itinerary in Senegal was designed to send a message, purposefully delivered in a French-speaking, Muslim-majority nation, to other Africans in countries that have not made the strides toward democracy that Senegal has. Obama also met with civil society leaders at the Goree Institute and visited the Supreme Court to speak about the importance of an independent judiciary and the rule of law in Africa's development.

The China Edit | Gieves & Hawkes, Rising Retail Rents, I.T's New ...

?Styled in Britain, Owned In China? (New York Times)

?For more than two centuries, Gieves & Hawkes at No. 1 Savile Row in London has been creating suits for the men of the British royal family ? including the dark navy one that Prince William wore 2010 to announce his engagement to Kate Middleton. Yet today, in the upscale IFC Mall in Hong Kong, it is common to see a customer from mainland China trying on a double-breasted blazer similar to one owned by the prince and happily paying 12,000 Hong Kong dollars, or $1,550, for it. This quintessential British brand, owned by Trinity Limited of China, now has its largest customer base in China and has been gathering a tailor?s knowledge of these new clients? ?I want to maintain the British aristocratic accent but move the collection in a more international direction,? said Jason Basmajian, former artistic director of the Italian men?s wear house Brioni, who was appointed creative director of Gieves & Hawkes early this year.?

?Shop Rents Driven by Cashed-up Youth? (South China Morning Post)

?Shop rents in most mainland cities are expected to increase steadily as retail sales continue to grow on the back of a vast market of young, fashion-conscious shoppers who are willing to spend a significant proportion of their monthly incomes in stores, says property consultancy CBRE.?The trend will not be confined to the first-tier cities, and tier-two cities, which are on the radar of international retailers, are expected to see a steady rise in new entrants to their retail markets.?

?Hong Kong?s I.T Limited Will Open Three New Mainland China Outlets? (China Retail News)

?Hong Kong fashion apparel retailer I.T Limited plans to invest HKD300 million to enhance its position in Hong Kong while expanding its business map in mainland China by opening three new stores in Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin in July 2013.?In addition, its new store in Chengdu is expected to open at the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014. The group?s largest project in 2013 is the new Galeries Lafayette project, which will be open in September in Beijing.?Located in Xidan, the new Galeries Lafayette is a joint operating project by I.T Limited and Galeries Lafayette Group. With an area of five million square feet, the new Galeries Lafayette department store will have specialty stores of various brands, including Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Fendi, Chloe, and Givenchy. Those stores will cover 70% of the total area; while the remaining 30% will display products and brands sold via I.T.?By opening four new stores, I.T will have 11 stores in mainland China.?

?The ?China Price? Is Not Right? (Jing Daily)

?Foreign brands in China are expensive. This is not just in relation to China?s lower income level: due to a mixture of duties, taxes, logistics costs, and price positioning, the price of foreign brands in China typically ranges from 30 to 80 percent more expensive than in their home markets.?Among China?s sophisticated consumers, the price gap between China and the rest of the world has become common knowledge?especially among the aspirational and affluent white-collar workers who are expected to drive growth in the premium and luxury segments.?These consumers are increasingly global and savvy in their purchasing behavior, have the opportunity to shop abroad, and are increasingly doing so. In an ongoing SmithStreet study of Chinese luxury customers in Europe, for example, every single respondent has essentially stopped buying luxury goods in mainland China, citing price as the primary (and typically solitary) reason.?

?Americans Exit Harrods Top 10 As Chinese Flock To London Store? (Bloomberg)

?The days of Americans being the biggest overseas shoppers at London?s Harrods store are over.?While seven years ago U.S. visitors were the top foreign spenders at the purveyor of luxury fashions and specialty teas, they are now outnumbered by wealthy customers from China and the Middle East, according to Managing Director Michael Ward. ?It is probable today that America will not feature in our top 10 of overseas customers because of the growth of the east and the mineral- and oil-rich nations,? Ward, who has been in charge for more than seven years, said in an interview in his office at the 164-year-old store. China is ?by far No. 1.??

Senate passage of immigration bill on track

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate passage of historic immigration legislation offering citizenship to millions looks near-certain after the bill cleared a key hurdle with votes to spare.

A final vote in the Senate on Thursday or Friday would send the issue to the House, where conservative Republicans in the majority oppose citizenship for anyone living in the country illegally.

Some GOP lawmakers have appealed to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, not to permit any immigration legislation to come to a vote for fear that whatever its contents, it would open the door to an unpalatable compromise with the Senate. At the same time, the House Judiciary Committee is in the midst of approving a handful of measures related to immigration, action that ordinarily is a prelude to votes in the full House.

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Tuesday that the Senate's advancement of stronger border security measures makes it "even more likely" that immigration reform will pass the House and become law. He said that the House won't take up the Senate bill but will do its own legislation, and added, "the majority of Republicans support the border security" as the keystone of immigration reform. He spoke on CBS' "This Morning."

"Now is the time to do it," President Barack Obama said Monday at the White House before meeting with nine business executives who support a change in immigration laws. "I hope that we can get the strongest possible vote out of the Senate so that we can then move to the House and get this done before the summer break" beginning in early August.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Tuesday she thinks it's important for the House to have its own bill and said, "Let's be optimistic about it."

Pelosi told CNN she thinks it has an excellent chance of passing there because GOP lawmakers are the party's poor showing with Hispanic voters in last year's presidential election "sends an eloquent message" to them.

Obama's prodding came several hours before the Senate voted 67-27 to advance the measure over a procedural hurdle. The tally was seven more than the 60 needed, with 15 Republicans joining Democrats in voting yes.

"I think we're building momentum," said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., who worked with Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., on a $38 billion package of security improvements that helped bring Republicans on board by doubling the number of border patrol agents and calling for hundreds of miles of new fencing along the border with Mexico. Those changes brought border security spending in the bill to $46 billion.

"The bill has been improved dramatically tonight by this vote, there's no question," Corker said. "My sense is we're going to pass an immigration bill out of the United States Senate which will be no doubt historic and I think something that's very, very important to this nation."

Last-minute frustration was evident among opponents. In an unusual slap at members of his own party as well as Democrats, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said it appeared that lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle "very much want a fig leaf" on border security to justify a vote for immigration.

Senate officials said some changes were still possible to the bill before it leaves the Senate ? alterations that would swell the number of votes in favor.

At the same time, Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., who voted to advance the measure during the day, said he may yet end up opposing it unless he wins changes he is seeking.

Senate Democrats were unified on the vote.

Republicans were anything but on a bill that some party leaders say offers the GOP a chance to show a more welcoming face to Hispanic voters, but which tea party-aligned lawmakers assail as amnesty for those who have violated the law.

At its core, the Senate bill would create a 13-year pathway to citizenship for an estimated 11 million immigrants living illegally in the United States.

The measure also would create a new program for temporary farm laborers to come into the country, and another for lower-skilled workers to emigrate permanently. At the same time, it calls for an expansion of an existing visa program for highly-skilled workers, a gesture to high-tech companies that rely heavily on foreigners.

In addition to border security, the measure phases in a mandatory program for employers to verify the legal status of potential workers, and calls for a separate program to track the comings and goings of foreigners at the nation's seaports and airports.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed a fast and affordable testing device for detecting the presence of toxic blue-green algae in water. There is currently no fast, affordable and user-friendly way for consumers to check water quality themselves.

The blue-green algae testing kit developed by VTT and the University of Helsinki is like a miniature laboratory. The device is the size of a thermometer, and it contains antibodies that react to any toxic bacteria found in a water sample. The test reveals in minutes whether the water sample contains toxic blue-green algae.

Thanks to the new testing device, consumers will soon be able to check themselves whether water is safe for swimming. At the moment, information on blue-green algal blooms in water is mostly based on visual inspections. However, visual inspections alone are not capable of determining whether an algal bloom is toxic. Until now, the toxicity of algae has generally had to be tested in a laboratory. For example, only approximately half of blue-green algal blooms in lakes are toxic and harmful to humans and animals. The new testing kit provides a fast and reliable means of determining whether a blue-green algal bloom is toxic.

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, favour eutrophic and warm water. Cyanobacteria can be found in almost every terrestrial and aquatic habitat - oceans, fresh water, damp soil, temporarily moistened rocks in deserts, and even Antarctic rocks. Every year, they form extensive blooms e.g. in the Baltic Sea and other waters. The prevalence of algae each summer depends on factors such as weather and water nutrient levels. The first blue-green algal blooms begin to form when the surface of sea water reaches 15 degrees.

The testing kit for detecting toxic blue-green algae is in the process of being commercialised. The kits could be on sale within 23 years.

Facebook Graph Search Let Dev Scrape Thousands of Public Phone Numbers

It looks like all our Graph Search privacy concerns weren't just the ravings of a paranoid, tinfoil-hat-wearing lunatic. Using Facebook's new comprehensive search tool, a tricksy little dev was able to compile a database holding thousands of Facebook users' personal phone numbers.

While the number of usable, identifiable phone numbers reached the thousands, Brandon Copley, the Dallas developer who exposed this major flaw in Facebook's privacy controls, was actually able to download 2.5 million different entries. Many of these, though, were either inactive or "not connected to a Facebook user with public settings."

Copley's extensive hacking, though discomforting, was supposedly executed with a seemingly noble goal?he wanted to expose Facebook's rampant availability of information as an invasion of its users' privacy. Naturally, Facebook disagrees, telling Tech Crunch:

Your privacy settings govern who can find you with search using the contact info you have provided, such as your email address and phone number. You can modify these settings at any time from the Privacy Settings page.

Copley first identified the vulnerability when he found goods that had been stolen from him listed on Craigslist. By entering the listing's phone number into Graph Search, he was easily able to track down the criminal. But while this helped him, he recognized how easy it might be to scrape the social network and put together a database. Upon sending in his concern to Facebook, a member of the security team replied:

I agree with you personally. We do have anti?scraping protections (rate?limiting, bad ip blocks, etc) but it comes down to people controlling their privacy, we can make the privacy tools available and we can encourage them to use them but we could never just switch their privacy settings for them. So there is not much more we can do.

Deciding to take matters into his own hands at this point, Copley decided to "show them how a 'feature' like this is a security flaw." As a Facebook developer, he was able to use his access tokens along with the Facebook Search API to performs thousands of searches a day with the API token of a non-rate-limited app. Facebook then sent him a cease and desist letter claiming that he was "unlawfully acquiring Facebook user data," but the truth of the matter is, every piece of data Copley ended up with had been set to public?often by default.

All this is coming in the wake of another Facebook privacy scare just last Friday, in which a post on Facebook's security blog revealed that it had been exposing contact info for six million users, entirely unawares. While that bug has been closed, we'll have to wait and see what comes of this particular revelation by Copley. Though if this bevy of privacy concerns is any indication, there are certainly more to come. [Tech Crunch]

Government on offensive outside Syria's capital

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian government forces stepped up their attack against rebel strongholds north of the capital Damascus on Saturday, while opposition fighters declared their own offensive in the country's largest city Aleppo.

Both sides intensified operations as an 11-nation group that includes the U.S., dubbed the Friends of Syria, began meeting in Qatar to discuss how to coordinate military and other aid to the rebels seeking to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Friends of Syria agreed on Saturday to do more to help the embattled rebels trying to overthrow Assad, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said. While he offered no specifics about stepped-up military and humanitarian aid, Kerry said the assistance would help change the balance on the battlefield.

Kerry also denounced Assad for inviting Iranian and Hezbollah fighters to fight alongside his troops, saying the Syrian president risked turning the civil war into a regional sectarian conflict.

The fighting in Damascus came as the Syrian government announced salary increases to state employees and members of the military, days after the Syrian currency dipped to a record low of 210 pounds to the dollar compared with 47 when the crisis began more than two years ago. The raise also covered pensions.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on an extensive network of activists in Syria, said the shelling of the district of Qaboun has killed three children, including two from the same family, since Friday.

Activists reported heavy shelling on many fronts on districts north of Damascus, apparently an attempt to cut links between rebel-held districts that have served as launching pads for operations against the capital.

The Lebanese TV station Al-Mayadeen, which had a reporter embedded with Syrian government forces in the offensive, quoted a military official as saying that the operation aims to cut rebel supply lines, separate one group from another, and secure the northern entrances to the capital. The regime's forces have struggled for months to regain control of these suburbs.

The Observatory said the neighborhood was being attacked from several different sides, while the shelling has caused structural damage and started fires. Activists from Qaboun posted on Facebook that government forces had brought up new tanks to reinforce its positions outside the neighborhood, and the bombardment had brought buildings down.

The Observatory said rebels targeted a police academy in the nearby Barzeh area Saturday, pushing back against a government attempt to storm the neighborhood. One rebel was killed in overnight fighting, it said.

State news agency SANA said troops "inflicted heavy losses" among rebels in several suburbs of Damascus.

A recent declaration by the U.S. that it had conclusive evidence that President Bashar Assad's regime used chemical weapons on a small scale against opposition forces prompted Washington to authorize the arming of rebels, a major shift in policy. The decision also followed advances by the government forces aided by fighters from Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Rebels say they have already received new weapons from allied countries? but not the U.S. ? that they claim will help them to shift the balance of power on the ground. Experts and activists said the new weapons include anti-tank missiles and small quantities of anti-aircraft missiles.

It was not clear if any of the new weapons have made it to the Damascus area. A spokesman for one of the main groups fighting outside of Damascus, the al-Islam brigade, said his group had none of the new weapons. The spokesman, who declined to be named for fear of government reprisals, spoke to The Associated Press through Skype.

He said government forces were shelling Barzeh from Qasioun mountain overlooking Damascus. Syria's main Western-backed opposition group said Thursday that 40,000 civilians in the two northern districts of Damascus are suffering from shortages of food and medical supplies.

Rebels and government also clashed in and around the northern city of Aleppo, where government forces announced an offensive earlier this month. Activists said troops clashed in the southern neighborhoods of Rashideen and Hamdaniya and in the western suburbs.

The Observatory said rebels pounded a military academy in the area, causing a fire in the compound. There were no immediate reports of casualties. In Rashideen, rebel forces have pushed government forces out from parts of the neighborhood, according to the local Aleppo Media Center network and posts on Facebook.

A statement by a coalition of rebel groups, posted on the Center's page, declared that the fighters are launching a new operation to seize control of the western neighborhoods of Aleppo. Amateur showed what appeared to be intense government shelling of villages in the area.

On Saturday, a dozen shells from Syrian forces landed in a northern Lebanese border town, some landing near homes, causing a panic among residents, the Lebanese news agency reported.

Syria's official news agency said government troops were targeting a group of infiltrators across the border. It gave no further details.

Rockets from Syria fall regularly into towns and villages near the border. On Friday, a rocket slammed into a suburb of Beirut, bringing the war closer to Lebanon's bustling capital, the second in less than a month. No one claimed responsibility for that attack, but rebels in Syria have vowed to retaliate against Hezbollah's Beirut strongholds for its increasingly active role assisting Assad.

In Damascus, a presidential decree said that the raise for the public sector could reach up to 40 percent depending on the salary of the civil servant. Pensions could rise by up to 25 percent, according to the decree.

It said those who make 10,000 pounds ($54) a month will get a 40 percent raise, while who make double that amount will get a 20 percent boost. People making 40,000 pounds a month will get a 5 percent raise, it said.

Syria's 2-year civil war has killed nearly 93,000 people. It increasingly pits Sunni against Shiite Muslims and threatening the stability of Syria's neighbors.

Iraq attacks kill more than 30

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide bomber blew himself up inside a Shi'ite mosque in northern Baghdad killing at least 12 people during evening prayers, police and medics said, in the deadliest of a series of attacks that claimed more than 30 lives across Iraq on Saturday.

Sectarian tensions in Iraq and the wider region have been inflamed by the civil war in Syria, where mainly Sunni Muslim rebels are fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, whose Alawite sect derives from Shi'ite Islam.

Insurgents including al Qaeda's Iraqi affiliate have been regaining ground and recruits from the country's Sunni minority, which feels sidelined since the U.S.-led invasion toppled former dictator Saddam Hussein and empowered majority Shi'ites.

"A suicide bomber blew himself up among the worshippers in the middle of evening prayer. There were bodies drenched in blood and others shouting for help while smoke filled the mosque," said a policeman at the scene.

A further 25 people were wounded in the attack, which took place in the Sab al-Bor district near Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad.

Scattered attacks across the country throughout the day killed at least 22 others, around half of them in or near the northern city of Mosul, where a suicide bomber killed four people at a police checkpoint.

In the western province of Anbar, which shares a border with Syria, militants detonated two car bombs near a checkpoint and attacked it with rocket-propelled grenades, killing five policemen.

Two people were killed when gunmen hurled a hand grenade at a gathering of laborers in Tikrit, 150 km (95 miles) north of Baghdad, and a roadside bomb near some restaurants in the center of the capital killed two more.

More than 1,000 people were killed in Iraq in May alone, making it the deadliest month since the sectarian bloodletting of 2006-07.

'Only God Forgives' Director Nicolas Winding Refn Teases an Unlikely Sequel

By Greg Gilman

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Nicolas Winding Refn is hoping to re-team with his "Vahalla Rising" star, Mads Mikkelsen ("Hannibal"), for another bloody adventure seen through the single eye of a violent mute.

The Playlist spoke to the director at Thursday's North American premiere of his latest film, "Only God Forgives," and Refn revealed that Mikklesen's character, One-Eye, would live again - in Tokyo.

"There's a similarity between 'Valhalla Rising,' 'Drive' and 'Only God Forgives.' But in a way I had this idea of Mads Mikklesen to go back to the origins of this character," Refn said. "But make the movie in Tokyo."

The 2009 film followed a silent warrior of supernatural strength who escapes his Viking captors, and joins a group of knights journeying to the Holy Land to fight in the Crusades, only to end up on an island populated by savages.

It's hard to imagine how Refn could craft a sequel to the film which took place in 1000 A.D., but he teased further adventures of One-Eye would be "about the future."

It's also hard to imagine when the idea will actually come into fruition, as he's currently in the process of resurrecting "Barbarella" for television, as well as developing an all-female horror film to direct.

"Only God Forgives," the director's second collaboration with Ryan Gosling and follow up to "Drive," hits theaters on July 19.

Bessemer Chamber of Commerce developing new visitors map ...

BESSEMER, Alabama -- In a time of GPS and tablet computers and smart phones, people seemingly hold a world of information in their hands and take it with them wherever they go.

So you might not think a traditional paper visitors map would have much value for a tourist, conventioneer or business person who comes to your town and ventures out of the motel in search of a good BBQ joint or a place to drop off some dry cleaning.

But that is not necessarily the case, say officials at the Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce

"Even with all the electronics, it's still the map that you get from the hotels and motels, and it's got everybody listed on the back," according to William Parsons, Chamber board chairman. "This is so much better if you have the map in your hand. You can locate things you didn't know were here. People from out of town don't know the local businesses."

And Barbara Highbargin of Village Profile, a firm based in Elgin, Ill., that develops maps and other products for chambers of commerce across the United States, says that maps are "a big help for some of the mom and pop businesses."

"GPS is really great, and it's really helped businesses that are big chain businesses," Highbargin said during a presentation at the Bessemer Chamber offices on Thursday. "So if you go somewhere and you want to go to Wendy's... that's going to get you there. But if you go to a new town and you don't know where their star restaurants are, this tells you that."

That is why the Bessemer Chamber is working with Village Profile to do a new visitors map for Bessemer -- the first new map developed for the city in over a decade -- as well as a web site that will feature the advertisers who are on the map.

The new site will complement, not replace, the present chamber site.

The hope is that these new products will help the chamber more effectively promote Bessemer, including its businesses and all of its attractions -- such as the Bessemer Civic Center, the Hall of History and Frank House Municipal Golf Course.

Village Profile, according to Highbargin, is a family-owned media and publishing business that has been in operation for 25 years.

Village Profile offers such products as maps, print publications, web sites, e-books, smartphone apps and mobile business directories.

The firm is a member of 600 chambers of commerce and does business with about 1,400, according to Highbargin.

"We're a big supporter of chambers of commerce," she said. "They are our primary customers."

Ronnie Acker, President of the chamber, said that it is important for the chamber to have a new map since it has been about a decade since a map was developed and about 5 years since there were any copies of it left to give out.

The Chamber will receive assistance from the City of Bessemer -- namely Eddy Parsons in the city's IT and economic and community development departments -- in making the map as accurate as possible, according to Acker and Parsons.

The new map will include projections of new streets or changes to streets that are forecast over the next 2 or 3 years. "That way the map will stay up to date," Acker said.

"It will be a good map," Parsons said.

And the map will not be just a traditional paper map but a map for the 21st century.

Advertisers on the map will also receive an ad on the new web site, and they'll have the option of including a QR code in their ad, so someone with the map and a smart phone in their hand can scan the code and go straight to the advertiser's own web site.

Highbargin used her tablet computer to show a?similar site that her firm did in Decatur, Ala. The site has chapters -- things like history, shopping, and recreation and entertainment.

The Bessemer site will be similar, according to Highbargin. "This provides good overall information for visitors and, because of the way we link this, if somebody types in "Bessemer history" or "shopping and dining Bessemer' (in an Internet search), this site is going to come up," she said.

Advertisers can buy chapter ads or smaller banner ads on the site, and the ads will link to the advertisers' web sites. Businesses who buy ads will also be included in an interactive map on the site, according to Highbargin.

Highbargin will sell the ads herself, going on sales calls in person. "That's why I like Village Profile," Acker said. "They have her here selling face to face. And that's what my members like.'

The chamber will share in the proceeds of the ad sales for the map and web site, according to Highbargin, who said the chamber's share will probably be in the range of 10-15 percent. The ads will also pay for the cost of developing and printing the map.

"The money is not that important," Parsons said. "It's about promoting Bessemer."

"This is the best deal for our members and the city," according to Acker, who said that the chamber considered doing the map in house but realized that it would strain their volunteers -- who are already producing a magazine -- and that the product would ultimately not be as good.

Highbargin said that businesses have until July 15 to buy an ad.

In the next phase, by August 15, she said that Acker must supply her with any of the basic editorial information about the city -- including locations and contact information of local attractions, hospitals, and other services -- that will be included on the web site.

The map should be available by November 1, with the number of copies dependent on how many ads Village Profile has been able to sell. "I am hoping for about 5,000 copies," Acker said.

The map will be distributed by such entities as hotels, real estate agents, the city of Bessemer and the chamber.

The web site will be operational by about January 1, according to Highbargin.?

For more information, call the Chamber at (205) 425-3253. The chamber's web site is www.bessemerchamber.com.

Ex-Enron CEO gets 10 years cut from sentence

Former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling is escorted from the federal courthouse Friday, June 21, 2013, in Houston after being re-sentenced for his role in the energy giants' collapse. Skilling was resentenced to 14 years as part of a court-ordered reduction and a separate agreement with prosecutors. The decision brought a protracted legal conclusion to one of the most notorious U.S. financial scandals. Skilling has been in prison since 2006, when he was sentenced to more than 24 years by U.S. District Judge Sim Lake. But an appeals court vacated his prison term in 2009, ruling that a sentencing guideline was improperly applied. That meant a reduction of as much as nine years. (AP Photo/Pat Sullivan)

(AP) ? Ex-Enron Corp. CEO Jeffrey Skilling ? seen by many as exemplifying the worst in corporate fraud and greed in America ? could be released from prison in about four years after a federal judge on Friday shaved off a decade from his original sentence of more than 24 years.

Skilling's resentencing during a packed courtroom hearing brought one of the country's most notorious financial scandals ? the collapse of the once-mighty energy giant ? to a conclusion that upset some former Enron workers.

Ex-Enron worker Diana Peters, the only victim who spoke at the resentencing hearing, said afterward in a phone interview that Skilling should have to serve his entire original sentence.

"Jeffrey Skilling has never taken any responsibility for his actions," said the 63-year-old Peters, who lives in Huntsville, north of Houston. "He has no remorse for the end result of what happened."

Even before Friday's resentencing, which was part of a court-ordered reduction and a separate agreement with prosecutors, Skilling had already been set to have his sentence of about 8? years shortened after an appeals court vacated his original sentence by U.S. District Judge Sim Lake.

The appeals court ruled that a sentencing guideline was improperly applied. However, Skilling's resentencing was delayed for years as he unsuccessfully sought to overturn his convictions, including appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Justice Department said in order to resolve a case that's gone on for more than 10 years, it agreed to an additional reduction of about 20 months as part of a deal to stop Skilling from filing any more appeals. Federal prosecutors say it will allow for $41.8 million of Skilling's assets to be distributed as restitution to victims of Enron's 2001 collapse.

Skilling, 59, who has been in prison since 2006, declined to make a statement during Friday's hearing.

His attorney, Daniel Petrocelli, said he disagrees with claims that his client, who "still maintains his innocence," never expressed remorse for what happened at Enron. He said Skilling wasn't aware of the illegal activities of others but "took complete responsibility for all the actions" at the company.

Petrocelli said the reduction, combined with time off for good behavior and other factors, means Skilling is likely to be released by 2017.

During the hearing, prosecutor Patrick Stokes criticized Skilling for continuing "to cast himself as a victim" and said Skilling "is anything but a victim."

"Mr. Skilling was not only at the pinnacle of Enron, he was at the pinnacle of the fraud schemes," Stokes said.

Once the money from Skilling's assets is added, about $560 million in restitution will have been collected for victims of the Enron scandal, Stokes said.

Former Enron employee George Maddox said he still blames Skilling for his losing $1.3 million in retirement savings when Enron collapsed. Maddox worked for 30 years as a plant manager with the company.

"Long sentences are for no one but poor people," said Maddox, 79, who lives in the East Texas town of Van and is now supporting his 16-year-old grandson and himself mainly on Social Security income.

Even with the reduced sentence, Skilling's prison term is still the longest of those involved in the Enron scandal. He was the highest-ranking executive to be punished. Enron founder Kenneth Lay's similar convictions were vacated after he died of heart disease less than two months after his trial.

Philip Hilder, a Houston attorney who represented several ex-Enron executives who cooperated with prosecutors, called Skilling's new sentence "a fair resolution" to his case.

But Andrew Stoltmann, a Chicago-based attorney who represented 10 people who lost money in Enron's collapse, called the new sentence "a slap in the face" to ex-Enron workers and investors.

Skilling was convicted in 2006 on 19 counts of conspiracy, securities fraud, insider trading and lying to auditors for his role in the downfall of Houston-based Enron. The company, once the seventh-largest in the U.S., went bankrupt under the weight of years of illicit business deals and accounting tricks.

The U.S. Supreme Court said in 2010 that one of Skilling's convictions was flawed when it sharply curtailed the use of the "honest services" fraud law ? a short addendum to the federal mail and wire fraud statute that makes it illegal to scheme to deprive investors of "the intangible right to honest services."

The high court ruled prosecutors can use the law only in cases where evidence shows the defendant accepted bribes or kickbacks, and because Skilling's misconduct entailed no such things, he did not conspire to commit honest services fraud.

The Supreme Court told a lower court to decide whether he deserved a new trial; the lower court said no.

Enron's collapse put more than 5,000 people out of work, wiped out more than $2 billion in employee pensions and rendered worthless $60 billion in Enron stock. Its aftershocks were felt across Houston and the U.S. energy industry.
