Pink became the new black in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at a New York City hair salon this October. To promote awareness of breast cancer in her community,?Rochelle Mosley, owner of Harlem?s?Salon 804, created her own pink-themed campaign. But for the hair salon owner, rather than just promoting a typical pink product, her awareness theme involved dressing her client?s tresses ? with pink, of course.

Clients who donated money to her first-annual fundraising efforts against the disease were given the option to have a strand of pink hair incorporated into their styles in solidarity with the cause.?For the people who had mohawks, we put pink in the back,? Mosley?told theGrio. ?For some we put it in the bangs. Others, we put it on the side of the long hair styles.?

Mosley ultimately raised $1,000 to fight a disease that has personally impacted both her and her predominantly African-American clientele, several of whom are breast cancer survivors or currently battling the disease. Black women are significantly more likely to die from breast cancer compared to white women after being diagnosed, according to a new study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research conference this week.

?The results of this study emphasize that clinical management and follow-up for patients with breast cancer, particularly black women, is important in the first few years after diagnosis,? Erica Warner, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health and author of the study, told CBS News.

A majority of the funds Mosley raised have been given to a close friend who is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. The remainder supported Salon 804?s team in the 8th annual American Cancer Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk that took place in Manhattan?s Central Park on Oct. 21.

?We are a family here,? Mosley told New York?s Daily News earlier this month about her grass roots program. ?Salon 804 is down for any cause? Everybody knows somebody who has been affected by breast cancer.?

Mosley?s clients appreciated her efforts to bring awareness to a disease that disproportionately affects families in the Harlem area.

?This is something, in this community, that?s really needed,? Ila Eller, 65, told the?Daily News. ?I really admire her for the way that she reaches out? Anything that she does, I support her. Her shop can be a catalyst for many, many things, and she seems to be doing that.?

Q&A: Could Sandy postpone the election?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One week before a close election, superstorm Sandy has confounded the presidential race, halted early voting in many areas and led some to ponder whether the election might even be postponed.

It could take days to restore electricity to more than 8 million homes and businesses that lost power when the storm pummeled the East Coast. That means it's possible power could still be out in parts of some states on Election Day next Tuesday ? a major problem for precincts that rely on electronic voting machines.

But as the storm breached the coast, even some of those intimately involved in the election seemed in the dark about what options are available to cope with the storm. Asked Monday whether President Barack Obama had the power to reschedule the election, White House press secretary Jay Carney said he wasn't sure.

Some questions and answers about what's possible and not when it comes to reworking Election Day.

Q. Could the Nov. 6 election be changed?

A. Yes, but it's highly unlikely, and it's not up to the president. Congress sets the date for the presidential election ? the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, every fourth year. Congress could act within the next week to change the date, but that would be tough because lawmakers are on recess and back home in their districts campaigning for re-election. Plus, it's likely that would mean changing the date for the entire country, not just those affected by the storm. What's more, Congress only selects the date for federal races, so changing the date would wreak havoc for state and local elections also scheduled for Nov. 6. States might have to hold two separate days of voting, which could bust state budgets.

Q. What about pushing back the election just in some states?

A. It's possible, but the legal issues get tricky. States, by and large, are in charge of their own elections. Each state has its own laws dealing with what to do if an emergency jeopardizes voting and who can make the call. Federal law says that if a state fails to conduct an election for federal races on the day Congress chooses, the state legislature can pick a later date. But state and federal laws don't always jive perfectly. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has said his state's laws don't grant him authority to reschedule the presidential election.

Q. Have elections ever been postponed before?

A. Yes, but not on the presidential level. New York City was holding its mayoral primary when terrorists struck on Sept. 11, 2001, and the city rescheduled the election. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Louisiana's governor postponed municipal elections in New Orleans after elections officials said polling places wouldn't be ready.

Q. Other than rescheduling the election, can anything else be done?

A. Voting hours could be extended at various locations. In places where electronic voting machines are in use, paper ballots could be used instead. Some areas also might choose to move polling locations if existing ones are damaged, inaccessible or won't have power on Election Day.

Q. Would those options create any other problems?

A. Lots. If poll hours are extended, under a 2002 law passed by Congress in response to the disputed 2000 presidential election, any voters who show up outside of regular hours must use provisional ballots, which are counted later and could be challenged. Sandy's impact was felt in some of the most competitive states in the presidential race, including Virginia and Ohio. The more provisional ballots that are cast, the greater the chances are that the winner won't be known until days or even weeks after the election.

There's another issue if poll hours are extended in some areas ? such as counties with the worst storm damage ? and not in others. That could prompt lawsuits under the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause, said Edward Foley, an election law expert at The Ohio State University.

Relocating polling places is also risky because it could drive down turnout, said Neil Malhotra, a political economist at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. "If you disrupt their routine and the polling place they've always been going to, even if you don't move it very far, they vote less," he said.

Q. What is the federal government doing to help?

A. The Federal Emergency Management Agency's administrator, Craig Fugate, said Monday he anticipated the storm's impact could linger into next week and affect the election. He said FEMA would look at what support it could provide to states before the election. "This will be led by the states," he said.

Raw Talent

Raw Talent

I love art. I have always loved art. I?m good at art. I have always been good at art. Art came easily to me and I found out, at an early age, I had a knack for it. I could draw, paint, weave, sculpt, and design. I had what they call raw talent.

My name is Iron-head Bradley. They call me iron-head because I?m hardheaded, hard to understand, and hard to get along with, at times. But, I can create some of the most beautiful artwork you will ever see ? and do it with ease.

So, when I went online hoping to learn about designing web sites I had ?promoting-my-own-artwork? in the back of my mind. I was going to get it out there. I wanted to show off all this creativity everyone has been ooh-ing and ahh-ing over. I wanted my own online business and I was willing to do what it took.

Ok, so, you already know I am an artsy kind of guy. What you might not know is that I love ALL things art. If it is art related it is Iron-head Bradley related. I can?t get enough of art or of the art world. It is in the blood. You could say I?m artistically inclined.

Though I didn?t have a website of my own, I could find my way around the internet. I had enough savvy to find the information I was looking for and I had a good idea of what would or wouldn?t work for me. I wish I could say I spent days searching hundreds of sites before I found the ideal site but it popped up only after about 15 searches.

I knew it when I saw it. I knew the site I was looking at would teach me everything I needed to know about selling my artwork online. I had seen a lot of web based art sites and really hated the ones that just dealt with 1 area of art ? like just paintings and nothing else.

The broader minded art sites might include drawing or photography with the paintings. The best art web sites, like the ones I like, are real broad. They can tell you all about drawings, paintings, sculpture, popular art events, art news, art classes and a whole slew of other art topics.

The site I found for building my site is really the ideal. It will teach me how to build my website, get good traffic going to it, and even help me to sell a masterpiece or two. And, all this on a website that focuses on art-based and art related things.

Some web sites are just plain better than others.

News sites knocked out as data center floods

When you see a website go down, the blame usually falls on hackers or, more often, software bugs. We don't often think of the Web as having a physical existence, but sure enough, Sandy has shown that nature can impact websites with greater force than any team of malicious code wizards can summon up.

Harbinger of the Apocalypse? ? Choice in Dying

In a recent comment Steve Oberski said:

Eric, I hope you realize that Windows 8 is a harbinger of the apocalypse.

Well, it has been for me. I have spent the last two days trying to straighten out my computer, and now, in order to save what I had not yet backed up (except as a system recovery archive)?on Windows 7, I have to buy a new hard drive, so that I can restore my backed up Windows 7, which got rubbished?trying to install Windows 8 as part of a dual boot system. Not only that, but I have found out that Windows 8 is less capable of multi-tasking than Windows 7, which is really a lot better at running two or three programs at the same time. And the new?interface is pure hell, and possibly?even uglier than hell itself, so I have installed a utility that gives me back the start button, and the familiar Windows interface. I don?t know what got into Microsoft, but the people over in Redmond seem to have taken leave of their senses. There are some things I like about Windows 8, but not enough to make it an attractive alternative to Windows 7. I?d chuck it out, except that there are some things I like, and it makes sense to try to keep up to date.

However, that?s not what I set out to write. As I went through my list of newspapers this morning, trying to keep up with at least some of the news, I noticed that there were a number of articles about gay and lesbian relationships and rights. As usual, the Guardian takes the vanguard, announcing in uncompromising tones that ?There is no place for homophobia in the church, anywhere in the world? ? a short op-ed?(an edited version of a?speech delivered in the House of Lords)?by Tim Stevens, Bishop of Leicester (pronounced like the name Lester, incidentally), which shows a picture of Desmond Tutu with the caption:

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who said that persecuting LGBT people was the ultimate? blasphemy.

That can be taken as a very forward-looking point of view, or it may be thought of as simply a restatement of the church?s view that homosexuality, though a defect, is not something on account of which people should be persecuted. Even the Roman Catholic Church, given to making pretty definitive pronouncements on moral matters, holds that, while a grave disorder, homosexuals ?must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity.? (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2358) Well, that?s that then!

This view, however, is of fairly recent provenance in the church, which had grown accustomed to the condemnation and persecution of homosexuals, and certainly not to treating them with respect, compassion and sensitivity ? which is a bit hard to credit after being told that, basing itself on scripture, the church has always held that ?homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered,? which is, we are told, consistent with the scriptural view that they are acts of??grave depravity.??(CCC 2357)?Is this not already to show insensitivity, disrespect and lack of compassion??So it?is odd to hear a churchman saying that persecuting LGBT people is the ultimate in blasphemy, when the church has done this year in and year out since the year dot. Indeed, the renewed vigour with which gay and lesbian persons are being persecuted ? in Africa, for example, and especially, I understand, in Uganda ? is due almost entirely to the degenerate Christian influence?of American evangelicals, who have made a special mission of exporting hatred of homosexuality to that unhappy place. Not able to get its own homophobia written into American law as they would wish it to be, they have accepted, as a consolation prize,?convincing people in places where fundamentalist Christianity is at the same time thriving and unburdened by secular traditions of individual rights. (This is due largely to the evangelical nature of the Church Missionary Society, but that is a story for another day. It abominated both slavery and homosexuality in equal measure. So, at most one cheer for Christian missions.)

As an example of the stupidity of Christians, take the proclamation of the American fundamentalist preacher John Mcternan, who heralded Hurricane Sandy as the scourge of God. On his blog, according to the Independent,?he wrote that the hurricane was??punishment for both candidates being ?pro-homosexual and behind the homosexual agenda?.?

Mcternan?s blog quickly went viral, as readers picked up on his claims that far from being extreme weather, Sandy was ?the Holy God of Israel systematically destroying America right before our eyes?.

God is the handiest tool in the religionist?s?armoury. If something goes wrong, it is God?s wrath at?_________?in execution (fill in the blank with your pet peeve). When people took exception to Mcternan?s claim,?he then?quickly qualified his judgement, saying:

I am not saying this super destructive hurricane was because of the homosexual act?what I am saying is the judgment is for the government promoting homosexual ?marriage? as an ordinance. [my italics]

Which is scarcely any?better, but from my own experience in the church, convincing many Christians that there are alternative sexualities is almost useless. Many young people no longer see the point, but those used to the ancient condemnations are often immovable.

I was member and sometime chairperson of a Sexuality Task Group in the Diocese of Nova Scotia for several years, a process of discussion which ended up deadlocked. (And, as soon as I retired, another task group was formed to go over the same ground. As long as we were talking, it was assumed, we were not divided, though divided we certainly were.) So it is very hard to see how Desmond Tutu can reasonably?speak of this in terms of blasphemy, however welcome it may be to hear church leaders speak out against this age-old prejudice. After all, the Bible has always been taken to have revealed that homosexuality is immoral, and that homosexuals are to be, if not killed ? the favoured way of dealing with such an abomination ? at least repudiated and shunned, for such, as St. Paul said, will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Besides, they are without excuse, for everyone can know that it is against the will of God,?largely (it seems) because?Paul considered homosexual acts?unnatural and disgusting, though it has been argued that Paul himself may have been gay.

How do Christians decide what is and what is not an abomination, what is or is not morally acceptable? Why, by means of revelation, of course. Ophelia Benson has a marvellous, humourously mordant attack on the idea of revelation in her first article published in The Freethinker. She entitles it ?In Custody,? and it is a devastating put-down of the whole idea of revelation. You can read it here, and it?s also linked on Butterflies and Wheels, where there is an ongoing discussion. It?s about doctrine and its unrevisable, revealed nature,?and?the church?s custody?of these (supposedly)??revealed? truths.?According to Bishop Bruskewitz of Lincoln (Nebraska), the church is not a democracy, and?church doctrines

are not open to votes. These are what God has revealed, and the custody of that revelation is of course in the possession of the Church. [my italics]

As Ophelia says, we are so used to this sort of thing that we scarcely notice how absurd it is. But, she says,

[t]hat?s unfortunate, because if the absurdity jumped out at everyone ? a grown man, at the top of his profession, saying that ?core doctrines? were ?revealed? by a distant magical being and are in ?the custody? of his organization and cannot be rejected or changed by mere humans ? then fewer people would acquiesce.

So, she suggests, take the word ?god? out of it, and speak instead of Terry, and then rewrite the bishop?s nonsense thus:

The core doctrines, which include birth control, the rights and responsibilities of women and men, choice in dying, choice in marriage, to name a few, were all ?revealed? three thousand years ago by Terry.

Now you can see how ridiculous it is,?for we can see that there?s no more evidence that a god revealed these things than that Terry did. So our prejudices, with their supposedly dramatic underpinnings of gods and people who?have been given custody of the gods? revelations, are simply composed of hot air, unless they can be justified in other ways. And no one yet, to my knowledge, has come up with a good reason to treat homosexual persons as somehow of less worth or less than human than heterosexual persons.

But, to return to my theme, Desmond Tutu?s statement ridiculous in the same way. Just as there can be no known revelation from a god or gods, so there cannot be blasphemy of a god or gods either. Blasphemy is as made up out of thin air as are revelations. What is or is not blasphemous is just as tenuously grounded as religious moral prescriptions, and trying to?claim prejudice against LGBT people as blasphemous is an attempt to give religious weight to a moral outlook which, as recently as thirty years ago, would have been condemned by practically all Christians. As Jeffrey John says in a Guardian piece (as recently as?August this year):

As Jim Cotter wrote 20 years ago: ?There are four stages in the church?s response to any challenge to its tradition. First, it pretends the challenge isn?t there. Secondly it opposes it vehemently. Thirdly, it starts to admit extenuations and exceptions. Finally it says: ?That?s what we really thought all along?.?

This is what Desmond Tutu is doing, and it?s fundamentally dishonest, and it should not be praised just because it happens to support what is?believed now?to be right.

Even the Bishop of Leicester gets it wrong. He begins his article this way:

In 1967 it was the then archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsey, who spoke in the House of Lords to support the decriminalisation of homosexuality in this?country, thus making a clear distinction in British law between a moral and a criminal issue.

Nice of Michael Ramsey, no doubt, but is it even a moral issue? At least Tim Stevens should have raised the question. For so long as it remains, as he puts it, a moral issue, and a disputed one at that, gay and lesbian people, bisexual and transsexual people will continue to be slighted and marginalised.

The Bishop of Leicester puts the question in terms of fundamental human rights, and the problem with this, as he recognises, but does not do enough to counter, is that it leaves the moral question open, and he leaves it open for a reason. He needs the moral question to be open.?He tells us that interference in the consensual sexual relations of adults ?is an affront to the fundamental Christian values of human dignity, tolerance and equality.? He then goes on to say that Anglicans are deeply divided on the moral question, and then,?sadly,?he equivocates fatally. He says that, despite their divisions on the moral question,

there cannot and must not be any basis for equivocating on the central issue of?equality before the law of all human beings whether heterosexual or homosexual.

But equality before the law is not enough, and Steven?s attempt to suggest that it is alright to continue to treasure links with other dioceses throughout the Communion, even with those where moral issues are understood in?disturbingly divergent ways, is simply temporising. No matter what, he says,

there is not and cannot be any place for homophobia in the church, and all are to be welcomed regardless of sexual orientation.

But this is prevarication, because some of the dioceses of which he speaks are out-and-out homophobic, and he knows it.?Not only do they?not welcome people regardless of sexual orientation, they treat them in despicable ways, and that is something that Stevens needs to recognise and condemn in honest terms, instead of hiding it behind clouds of words.

The problem here lies in?the belief that the church must never be divided,?that schism is a great sin. Rowan Williams, who was thought to be a liberal on the issue of the recognition of gay and lesbian persons in the church, has acted, as Archbishop of Canterbury,?in extremely illiberal ways, actions which have led to accusations of hypocrisy and double-dealing, just to keep the world-wide Anglican Communion from shattering. Jeffrey John, Dean of St. Albans, accused the archbishop (and the church) of taking a ?morally contemptible? position. So acrimonious?was the dispute over issues of sexuality at the Lambeth Conference in 1998, that Richard Holloway, then Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, left the church in disgust, and now calls himself post-Christian.

The point, though, is that the claim that persecuting LGBT persons is the ultimate blasphemy simply will not stand up to scrutiny. It is a deliberate prevarication, meant to put the church in an acceptagble light.?The suggestion is ? and Steven?s makes it explicit ? that the church stands for the??values of human dignity, tolerance and equality.? He calls them Christian values, but this may be doubted. Stop at any point in the history of the church and ask whether these values were being?honoured more greatly in their performance or in their breach, and I think the evidence would probably favour the latter. Christians have no more right to claim these values than any other group of human beings, and possibly less. No doubt there are helpful moral lessons to be derived from the gospels, and even from church teachings,?but we must not forget that there are terrible lessons to be learned from the gospels too, and even more terrible ones defended by the church. Jesus? condemnation of the villages of Chorazin and Bethsaida to a fate worse than that of Tyre and Sidon, because their inhabitants did not respond to him in faith, is not the act of a man who had much respect for the values of human?dignity, tolerance or equality.

The ruins of Chorazin, overlooking the Sea of Galilee, one of the villages, according to the gospels,?damned by Jesus (Luke 10.8-14). The Jesus?Seminar suggests that the saying is the?product of an early Christian prophet. The?saying,?in the immediately preceding verse,?that the fate of places which did not receive the message of the gospel gladly would be worse than that of Sodom, because, he said, if the things that had been revealed to them had been revealed to the inhabitants of Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented in dust and ashes, brings the issue of homosexuality into play, unfortunately, since?these supposedly?criminally unnatural practices have been?widely thought to be the?moral?failure?which attracted the wrath of God upon Sodom and Gomorrah (though in a more correct reading?it probably had more to do with early notions of the duty of hospitality than with sex).

The obvious problem of basing one?s moral life on moral prescriptions or prohibitions thought to have been revealed by Terry thousands of years ago is that it is almost impossible to change them in order to accommodate desirable moral change, unless?you are an Anglican and can do it by sleight of hand!?It leads to a kind of moral sclerosis, and an inability to see other points of view?of the world other than one?s own. Such things, whether people recognise it or not, are bound to be harbingers, if not of the Apocalypse, at least of destructive confrontation and continuing injustice defended in the name of God (or Terry ? take your pick!). This blog is all about this moral sclerosis, with a focus on the inability of the?churches to see that their prohibition of assisted dying is simply untenable. Christians don?t even have a scriptural warrant for?a prohibition that stems largely from?the theology of St. Augustine (354-430 CE). No wonder they fall back on?supposedly?clinching secular arguments, which are in fact no better than absent scriptural justification.??But, of course, the issue of moral sclerosis and its harm spreads to many other things, and it is high time we recognised that the religions do not have any special insight into what is morally good or morally bad, and that the continuing claim that they have such insight, and have been given custody of revealed moral laws, does much more harm than good. We don?t need empty claims about Terry confusing the issues.

Medical insurance: Why your city and profile are important | Firstpost

by Akshay Mehrotra

As medical expenditures are sky rocketing with every passing year, medical insurance is fast becoming a must for every household. As the need for healthcare insurance is becoming evident, almost all of us are faced with two questions ? What would be the right health insurance plan for my family? And how much health insurance do I need?

Representational image. Reuters

Let?s address the first question, what would be the right health insurance plan for my family. For this please understand there are two types of health insurance plans ? mediclaim policy and medical payout policy.

Mediclaim policy reimburses you the cost of medical treatment either as a cashless bill settlement at the hospital or via reimbursement of bills submitted. Basically speaking your medical expenses are reimbursed.

Medical payout policy or loss of income policy also popularly called hospital cash policy, give you a cash payment for the event of hospitalization. This policy is not towards treatment costs but gives your instant cash if hospitalised. This type of policy is aggressively mis-sold as mediclaim which it is not.

Now coming back to the main question ? how much insurance cover do I need ? well unlike term life insurance there is no set formula like annual salary x 8 for amount of cover, but I follow some very basic rules in my advise. And I have followed a small formula sheet to calculate the amount of health insurance needed:

There is a simpler formula also which I follow as a thumb rule, which basically is derived from a simple fact: find out the room rent of a the normal hospital were you will go for a medical treatment * 200 is the Sum Assured in your health policy.

Taking this as an example: an upwardly mobile person living in South Mumbai should take a minimum Rs 6 lakh Sum assured of individual health insurance or a family floater of Rs 8.3 lakh for a family of 4.

Similarly in Jaipur the sum assured will get reduced to Rs 3 & Rs 4 lakh respectively.

Most of us end up taking a very small sum assured policy, my advice however is that you must always opt for the right amount, a little extra will not hurt as much as a lesser cover when it comes to medical costs.

Let?s look at some of key features, which must be included in your mediclaim policy:

1.?? ?Pre hospitalization & Post hospitalization treatments costs should consider at least 60-90 days of pre-hospitalisation and post-hospitalisation costs.
2.?? ?Daily cash benefit
3.?? ?Free health checkup benefit.
4.?? ?Coverage of pre-existing diseases
5.?? ?Maternity cover inbuilt into the product
6.?? ?Coverage of non-allopathic treatments or alternative medicine treatments.
7.?? ?Critical illness rider
8.?? ?Discount on claim free renewal
9.?? ?Renewability of product ? a life long renewable product is best suited.

A quick comparison between Individual Mediclaim vs Floater Mediclaim plans is give below

However, there can be a few drawbacks to family floater plans too. The price of family floaters generally depends on the age of the eldest member of the family. As the age of the eldest member rises above 48-52 years, the premium can shoot up.

Thus a family with eldest less then 45 years should opt for Family Floater

Guideline of Linen Cabinets for Bathrooms | Shower Remodel

Linen cabinets for bathrooms are one type of bathroom storage furniture that fits in nicely with smaller bathroom settings. They are usually tall, thin cabinets that can be placed against a wall for storing towels, sheets and bath accessories. A corner linen tower can fit snugly against the corner wall of your bathroom to save even more space. These pieces are available in different colors or wood finishes including cherry, walnut, oak and pine.

Some styles of linen cabinets for bathrooms contain open shelves for easy access to the items being stored while others come with covered or glass cabinet doors to hide the products within. Cabinets with adjustable shelves offer more flexibility in storage as linens and towels could be stored at the bottom and more delicate items placed on the top shelf. Linen cabinets, or usually called as linen towers, come in a variety of beautiful styles to include both traditional and contemporary designs. They are but one way you can organize your bathroom accessories while sprucing up the environment.

It can be a struggle for anyone looking for bathroom linen cabinets to find a piece that goes well with their existing bathroom furniture and fixtures. Browsing through the huge array of available cabinets can leave shoppers overwhelmed, especially if they don?t know the terminology used to describe furniture styles. Below is an explanation of the three most common styles that you will come across in your search.

The first style is traditional linen cabinets. Traditional bathroom linen cabinets take their inspiration from antique European design. In some cases you will also find Asian-inspired designs, which were popular in the United State and Europe during the Victorian era. The traditional style encompasses a variety of more specific styles, such as Neoclassical, French Country, or British Colonial.

The traditional style is very orderly, with furniture pieces often being purchased in matching sets of several pieces to give an entire room a cohesive look. If you are redoing your bathroom in the traditional style you may want to make your linen cabinet and any other furniture in the room, such as your vanity and sink cabinet, match for a very traditional look. If you are adding a cabinet to your existing bathroom set you can try to match the finish. If you?re not able to do that it is usually best to find a piece that complements your existing furniture in shape but deliberately has a very different finish. This way you don?t end up with a cabinet that almost matches the other furniture but fails.

Traditional bathroom linen cabinets, like other traditional furniture, tend to be quite ornate with a lot of detailed carving and molding. This style features curving lines that give a feminine feel. The scale of the furniture can be much larger than other styles, so make sure your bathroom is large enough to accommodate a larger piece of furniture. For materials, traditional cabinets feature wood, either stained or painted, and Traditional cabinets are made from a wide variety of woods, either stained or painted. Doors and drawers can be either wood or glass and the hardware can come in a variety of finishes. It is a good idea to match the hardware to the finish on your faucet and other furniture.

Modern Design Wall Hung Bathroom Storage Linen CabinetModern Design Wall Hung Bathroom Storage Linen Cabinet

The next style is modern style. It is the complete opposite of the traditional style. This sleek, uncluttered style focuses on utility, using the space they occupy more efficiently than a traditional cabinet. These bathroom linen cabinets can have an almost complete lack of ornamentation, using highly contrasting hardware or glass elements instead of intricate wood details to bring out the design. As the focus in the modern style is on straight lines, modern furniture can feel very masculine.

Some people worry about modern bathroom linen cabinets looking cold; however there are many options in deep, rich wood tones that will keep your bathroom from looking too clinical. Chrome and glass are commonly used materials in modern style cabinets, often providing a nice contrast against the dark woods.

Modern Design Wall Hung Bathroom Storage Linen Cabinets In Dark Color Corda WoodModern Design Wall Hung Bathroom Storage Linen Cabinets In Dark Color Corda Wood

This style may not be for you if you tend to be a bit messy. Because of the clean lines of the furniture, a few things lying out on your bathroom sink could look cluttered. Fortunately, many modern cabinets come with solid doors that can easily be used to hide your clutter away.

The last style is transitional. Transitional design is a blend of features from both the traditional and modern styles. This style includes more specific groups such as the Shaker and Arts & Crafts styles. Transitional furniture is great if you find the traditional style too formal and stuffy but find the modern style to be too cold or too trendy. The lines and embellishments of transitional furniture are simpler than that of traditional pieces, but more elaborate than those of modern designs. While not always trendy like modern furniture, transitional cabinets have a classic, timeless look that will last for many years to come.

The focus in transitional design is a more relaxed, casual look that fits well with a wide variety of furniture pieces and fixtures. These bathroom linen cabinets tend to be more moderately scaled and so can fit into smaller bathrooms.? Transitional furniture combines both curves and straight lines, making it not too masculine or too feminine. This is a great option if your bathroom will be shared by a man and a woman.

These descriptions should make it easier for you to find the cabinet that you are looking for. Remember, these are not hard and fast design rules, in the end get something that you are happy with and don?t worry too much about matching the style classification of your other furniture pieces. There are styles of bathroom linen cabinets that go well with the decor in any home.

Molecular machines move like muscles

Artificial muscles can be made with cables on pulleys, driven by heat, or twisted together from carbon nanotubes.

But it's been hard to duplicate the way muscle cells contract and relax at the cellular level, driven by little more than the impulses from the brain.

That is starting to change. A recent study by a team headed by Nicolas Giuseppone at France's Universit? de Strasbourg shows it's possible to make molecules that respond to changes in the acidity of a solution, known as pH.

BLOG: Immortality for Humans by 2045

By stringing the molecules together, they got a chain that contracted when the pH was higher and expanded when the pH was low. The total change in length was about one nanometer, or a billionth of a meter.

That's enough for a virus to notice, but not enough to be useful for people.

So the team strung lots of the molecules together in a kind of chain. The total amount of expansion was 10 micrometers. Although still small, it's the approximate size of spider silk fibers ? just big enough to see with a good magnifying glass.

"We show it's possible to make (the molecules) work together to cross into the macroscopic scale," Giuseppone told Discovery News.

The way it works is with a chemical called rotaxane. Rotaxane is a molecule that has a dumbbell shape, surrounded by a ring called a macrocycle.

The macrocycle has an affinity for negative charges, because the molecule itself is rich with positive ones. When there are more positive charges ? hydrogen ions ? in the surrounding environment, it will move to one side of the dumbbell. When there are fewer, it moves to the other side.

When two rotaxane molecules are placed alongside each other, they function like the extension on a seat belt or handbag strap. Each of these pairs is connected by another molecule, called a ligand, combined with certain metal ions, making a "daisy chain." A higher pH means the molecules sit closer together, while a lower one means they stretch further apart.

"(The experiment) is coming one step closer to the dream of materials that employ the concerted motions of countless molecular machines to deliver work against a load on the macroscopic scale, as do the muscles in our own bodies," said Fraser Stoddart, a professor of chemistry at Northwestern University, in an email. Stoddart was not involved in the research.

NEWS: Scientists Build Self-Replicating Molecule

"The work sounds like real significant progress from molecules that change their dimensions to large aggregates that do so," wrote Miklos Ketesz, a professor of Chemistry at Georgetown University and head of the Kertesz lab, via email.

It will still take some time before anyone can build anything like an artificial muscle, he added, but the work is proof of principle.

Giuseppone said the idea came in part from the research that Stoddart had done in the field, as well as some earlier work by Jean-Pierre Sauvage of the Universit? Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. Their experiments got him thinking about the mechanics of the links between rotaxane molecules.

The next challenge, he said, is to make the aggregate big enough. "You need to take several of the chains and bind them into a fiber," he said.

The work was published online in the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition on Oct. 18.

Ancient Tsunami Devastated Lake Geneva Shoreline

The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on 4 December 1971 Deep Purple had set up camp in Montreux, Switzerland to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio?"referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "the mobile" in the song lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire when somebody in the audience fired a flare gun into the rattan covered ceiling, as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line.[7][8] The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel. The "Funky Claude" running in and out is referring to Claude Nobs, the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival who helped some of the audience escape the fire.

Claude Nobs (2006), the "Funky Claude" mentioned in the songLeft with an expensive mobile recording unit and no place to record, the band was forced to scout the town for another place to set up. One promising venue (found by Nobs) was a local theatre called The Pavilion, but soon after the band had loaded in and started working/recording, the nearby neighbours took offence at the noise, and the band was only able to lay down backing tracks for one song (based on Blackmore's riff and temporarily named Title n?1), before the local police shut them down.

Finally, after about a week of searching, the band rented the nearly-empty Montreux Grand Hotel and converted its hallways and stairwells into a makeshift recording studio, where they laid down most of the tracks for what would become their most commercially successful album, Machine Head.

da:ns Fest 2012! Notion: Dance Fiction! Oppa Frankenstein! ? For ...

Joavien Ng performs in Choy Ka Fai's Notion: Dance Fiction. Photo courtesy of Yi-Chun Wu/The Esplanade.

Earlier this afternoon, Choy Ka Fai stuck some pads on my right arm and left cheek and let rip a few thousand volts of electricity.

I?m exaggerating of course. It was only a slight electrical jolt, but it was enough to make my arm contort involuntarily. And my face is still twitching ever so slightly. I hope the lady in the bus didn?t think I was coming on to her.

But at least I can say that for less than a minute, I became a butoh artist. Sorta. Kinda.

What if you can digitally map out, codify and archive dance movements? And what if, with a tweak of a knob or a press of a button, you can access and enact it?

That?s the premise behind Notion: Dance Fiction, Choy?s fascinating lecture performance that?s part of an ongoing project about muscle memory.

It?s all very Matrix-y. Plug in and voila! Instant Moonwalk.

Armed with his laptops, consoles and this afternoon?s collaborator, choreographer Joavien Ng, Choy presents the preliminary results of this unusual research.

In NDF, he reduces dance to, literally, a physiological tic, a muscle contraction brought about by electroshock. He aligns it to scientific developments stretching all the way back to the 1700s and to forays in contemporary art from artists like Stelarc and Daito Manabe.

Creating a programme that allows him to convert video images of dance pieces into electrical impulses, he sticks aforementioned pads unto his body and ?does? butoh artist Tatsumi Hijikata?s Summer Storm.

And then comes the fun part. He gets Ng to do the same thing. Using samples from his database of performances by contemporary dance choreographers, which are also projected onscreen, Ng does an Yvonne Rainer, a Vaslav Nijinsky, an Isadora Duncan, a Lin Hwai-Min, and even one of her earlier pieces.

Insider quips abound. A technical glitch during her Akram Khan moment sees her ?looped? (?The file is corrupted,? says Choy. A joke or a jibe?). She does a Jerome Bel?which basically entails doing nothing.

And then Choy complicates things, cutting and pasting, combining pieces: Rainer meets Pichet Klunchun, a Rainer, Klunchun and Merce Cunningham hybrid. A Frankenstein of dance.

Human agency is erased as dance becomes patterns filtered through machines. For some, the possibility is an ethical and artistic nightmare (what happens to genius? To chance?) For others, it?s a glimpse at a gamechanging breakthrough (I can become the next Messi! We can all become the next Messi!)

It?s a lovely debate to have, and indeed, a number of folks during the post-show discussion brought up questions having to do with one or the other.

But there?s something else going on here. If the title isn?t enough of a giveaway, the contrast between the crudeness and jerkiness of Choy?s earlier demonstrations and Ng?s rather fluid reenactments of some complicated movements should be enough of a hint.

You don?t have to try it out to see that right now, this proposition is really one for the future, but since I did, I?d have to point out that it can get pretty uncomfortable. Ng would have to be a masochist to go through all that. Heck, I don?t think the body?s even prepared for such abuse.

And that?s where the coolness of the piece really lies?that the two?have deadpanned their way through NDF, talking about and discussing muscle memory and all that scientific stuff, pushing a case for it, while at the same time interrogating it.

Seen in that light, NDF debunks its own arguments and proves its exact reverse: in the end, Ng combines all these different portions into one piece, without any outside assistance.

And through it all, we, the audience, are not so much deceived as made complicit by our very act of viewing in this continuous shuffling between fact and fiction.

While there is a twist to the proceedings, NDF is far from being a ?punchline? work. When it quotes the Rainer piece ?The Mind Is A Muscle?, you understand it not only in relation to the debate about where the art of dance really comes from, but also in relation to you sitting there and shaping your own cognitive experience of the show. Inasmuch as Choy and Ng are piecing together these mini-choreographies, aided by technology or otherwise, you are likewise doing the same thing.

Shocking, isn?t it?

The Rise of Natural Weight Loss Supplements

It would seem that as the population of the world grows so too does its waistline and especially so in the Western world. There is now an increasing awareness that obesity is becoming a major problem and the need to control this problem has resulted in a huge amount of money being invested by the pharmaceutical industry to develop new weight loss supplements.

Weight has become a major issue in American and Western healthcare and it is possible that as many as 60% of Americans are overweight. There have been drugs developed with the aim of addressing this issue. Drugs such as fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine have been developed, promoted and widely sold on the market only for it to be discovered that they case cardiac valvular dysfunction. The drugs were then withdrawn but serious damage had already been done to numerous people. Many pharmaceutical weight loss products have side effects that may occur while taking them and these can range from annoying to devastatingly embarrassing and can also make travel difficult.

The natural products industry has also entered the weight loss supplement race by designing novel products but unfortunately some of these have been proven to be equally as dangerous as their pharmaceutical products counterparts. There are however natural weight loss supplements that are safe and are an alternative to products that are potentially lethal and I will talk about some of these below.

L-arabinose: L-arabinose has been reported to inhibit the sucrose enzyme. By inhibiting this enzyme sucrose is not converted to fructose and glucose which are used to build fat. This supplement has been used and sold for years and is a natural product.

Hibiscus Tea: This kind of tea has been shown to contain porcine pancreatic amylase inhibitors. It is not known exactly how it works but it is known that it is a non-competitive inhibitor and it is also possible that it could be working as a genomeceutical by altering the expression of the enzymes.

Probiotics: Probiotics can be used to assist in the digestion of excess L-arabinose. Only high quality strains that have proven stability and are produced by reputable manufacturers should be used.

Phlorizin: This product has benefits for diabetics and has also made the cross over to weight loss supplements.

All the natural weight loss supplements listed above are safe and natural products and can be used as alternatives to pharmaceutical compounds. These products are sure to have a far reaching effect as the natural weight loss supplement industry matures into a science based and responsible health care system. The possibilities of the industry are endless and we are only really at the beginning of this every growing area of nutrients.

The Not-so-spooky Presidio Pet Cemetery - Hidden Histories ...

Welcome to Curbed's ongoing series titled Hidden History, where Curbed highlights a Bay Area location with a secret past. Maybe it's no longer there, maybe it's been converted into something else, but each spot holds a place in Bay Area history - even if not many people know it. Have a suggestion or know a place with a secret history? The tipline's always open or you can leave a comment after the jump.

Just in time for Halloween, this week's Hidden History focuses on the spooky ghostly world of cemeteries. But not just any ole eternal resting place - the Presidio Pet Cemetery.

The final resting place for hundreds of animals owned by families that were stationed at the Presidio, the pet cemetery dates back to the 1950's. According to the National Park Service, there are no official records for the site, meaning it probably sprung up from the families themselves with authorization from one of the commanding officers. There are legends of previous incarnations of the cemetery, which some believe was originally a burial ground for nineteenth-century cavalry horses or World War II guard dogs.

The grave markers feature some heart-wrenching and historic details on the beloved pets, including their birthplace (like Patches the Cat born in Dachau), family names and owners' ranks, including majors, colonels, and generals. Some look like official military tombstones, due to Presidio Boy Scout volunteers who replaced crumbling markers sometime in the late 1980s or early 90s.

When the Presidio was in process of becoming a National Park, one (heartless?) congressman against the NPS conversion used the pet cemetery as fodder, sending letters to his supporters with a photo of the pet cemetery and the headline asking "Is This Your Vision of a National Park?" Apparently it was, because the Presidio became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1994 (though the cemetery is not included in the official National Historic Landmark district).

Today the cemetery is officially closed to new burials, but since it isn't patrolled, people still sneak in to bury their pets. When the Doyle Drive project began a few years ago, the pet cemetery was designated an "environmentally sensitive area," so it was protected from construction.

My name is pronounced vonnie monay

I have created hundreds of original musical compositions, but due to the excessiveness of the Organized Criminal Gang Stalking I have to endured on a constant basis; I have only 60 songs?and only 60 poems?copywritten.

I also have not had the time to even present my work in a professional manner.

I figured I would present it raw since these creatures think they can erase me and my life. ?They are lowlives who think they can make their outrageous "frame ups" stick.

I have been a vegetarian all of my life.

I know it is not for everyone and have never and will never try to force anyone to eat the way I do. I was forced by my mother to eat meat because of my blood disorder, Thalassemia Minor. She tried to frighten me into eating it by telling me that I would die if I didn't. I am still alive!

I am a True Gemini a Syzygy and a Grand Cross!

Syzygy?in?Astronomy? is an alignment of three celestial objects, as the sun, the earth, and either the moon or a planet.

In a Grand Cross, there is one planet in each astrological element (fire, earth, air and water) but all the planets are in signs of the same modality or quality.

I am a victim of child pornographers, sadistic, homosexual, pedophile, rapists, kidnapping, forced breeding & sex slavery. I am still stalked by these slanderers. I will tell anyone who will listen until I have justice. I am so fed up with them that I have begun to names names.

These brute beasts twice dead (A New Teatament description of these creatures) ought to thank me for sharing their actual "Accomplishments" Crimes.

I think it is all about the land that was stolen from my family.

Is Santa Coming Early for Gold & Gold Mining Stocks? -- MrSwing

By: Chris Vermeulen ? www.TheGoldAndOilGuy.com

If you own physical gold, gold mining stocks or plan on buying anything related to precious metals before year end, you are likely going to get excited because of what my analysis and outlook shows.

Since gold topped abruptly a year ago (Sept 2011) with a massive wave of selling which sent the price of gold from $1920 down to $1535, technical analysts knew that type of damage which had be done to the chart pattern could take a year or more to stabilize before gold would be able to continue higher.

Fast forwarding twelve months to today (Oct 2012). You can see that gold looks to have stabilized and is building a basing pattern (launch pad) for another major rally. The charts illustrated below show my big picture analysis, thoughts and investment idea.

Weekly Spot Gold Chart:

The weekly chart can be a very powerful tool for understanding the overall trend. This chart clearly shows the last major correction and basing pattern in gold back in 2008 ? 2009. Right now gold looks to be forming a very similar pattern.

Keep in mind this is a weekly chart and if you compare the 2009 basing pattern to where we are today I still feel it could take 3 ? 6 months before gold truly breaks out to the upside and kicks into high gear. The point of this chart is to provide a rough guide for what to expect in the coming weeks and months.

Gold Stock Investing

?

Weekly Chart of Junior Gold Miner Stocks:

If you follow gold closely then you likely already know junior gold mining stocks can lead the price of gold up to two weeks. Meaning gold mining stocks which you can track by looking at GDX and GDXJ exchange traded funds will form strong bullish chart patterns and generally start moving up in price before physical gold.

The chart below shows the junior gold miner ETF with a VERY BULLISH chart and volume pattern. Remember that gold stocks are a leveraged play on gold in most cases. For example, if gold moves up 1% we typically see GDX and GDXJ move 2-4%. Because they act as a leveraged play on physical gold smart money and big institutions start accumulating these investments in anticipation of gold rising.

GDXJ has formed a tight bull flag and the volume levels confirm there is big money moving into these investments. The first price target on GDXJ using technical analysis for a measured move points to the $32 area. Looking forward twelve months with gold trading above $2000 we could see this fund more than double in value.

Bonus: while most traders focus on GDX gold miner fund, I prefer the GDXJ fund because its almost identical in price performance BUT it pays you a 5% dividend?

Gold?s Seasonality:

It?s that time of year again where gold tends to move higher. Below you can see where we are and what the price of gold typically does in November.

Gold Seasonality Trading

?

Gold Investing & Trading Conclusion:

Looking forward one month (November) and factoring in the recent pullback in gold to known support levels along with strong buying of junior gold mining stocks, I feel gold will take another run at the $1800 level and for GDXJ to test its previous higher of $25.50 at minimum. If both those levels get taken out then a massive bull market for precious metals could be triggered. Only time will tell?
