Filmmaker touts world premiere of 'Idle Threat'

Screening right now at Upstate Films Rhinebeck is one of the most talked-about films of the festival, ?Idle Threat.?

?Idle Threat? is a project by George Pakenham started around 2004. He noticed cars idling on the street, just sitting there, running engines, exhausting exhaust. He wasn?t a fan. So he started going up to the vehicles, mostly government or utility vehicles, and told these folks that what they were doing was wrong for the environment. He found that idling was a ticketable offense in New York City, but by police, and they didn?t enforce it. He was upset. He did something about it.

?Idle Threat? is George and his camera, knocking on drivers? windows and being a vigilante of sorts. Some drivers get angry, some understand. Just about all are part of this film, in which George takes his mission to City Hall, and gets Mayor Bloomberg to sign laws that make idling much more of a punishable offense. In short, Pakenham was activist who took action.

?I was really proud of that,? Pakenham said at the Woodstock Film Festival launch party. ?I believe that New York State and city drivers all need to change behavior.?

Pakenham said his goal was to bring to light a major problem caused by not doing such a simple act: turning off your engine while you wait.

?I?m exhilarated and exhausted,? he joked about the film being finished; it premiered for the world Thursday at Woodstock.
