So Why Is LinkedIn An IPO Standout?

Screen Shot 2012-05-30 at 1.57.16 PMEarlier this morning at D10 KPCB analyst Mary Meeker showed a pretty definitive slide about the current state of the public markets with regards to tech companies. "The private market is in a bubble," Meeker said, "We have a $1 billion fund, and didn't invest once in Q1 because the valuations too crazy." The problem with these valuations is that public market investors are more skeptical, Meeker asserted bringing up the above slide comparing the IPOs of Facebook, Zynga, Groupon, Pandora and LinkedIn. Because of this skepticism their valuations are suppressed, almost all were trading at 20% lower than their initial IPO pricing, all except LinkedIn that is. The public market has taken kindly to the career focused social network, which is currently trading at $100 a share, 137% above its strike price of $32.

Are you eating your vegetables? This laser can tell you

23 hrs.

Invasive tests and unreliable recall make getting good information on food intake difficult for nutritionists and healthy eaters alike. A new device may allow doctors to tell how well you've been eating after doing nothing but shining a laser on your skin for 30 seconds.

It's well known among those in the field that what you eat can show externally ? and not just in your waistline?or smeared on your sleeve. As the body metabolizes certain things, like vegetables, some of the byproducts make their way to your skin, your hair, even your eyes. You are what you eat, and apparently you look like it too.

But only in subtle ways: a vegetable-rich diet will produce lots of what are known as skin carotenoids. They accumulate in the skin and can be measured to infer one's eating habits. But no one wants to give skin samples, and doctors would rather not waste time sending them in to the lab. Luckily, a chance meeting between two experts?produced something better.

Susan Mayne, a nutritional epidemiologist at Yale, happened to sit next to a laser physicist from the University of Utah on the way to a conference. By the time their?16-hour flight was over, they were drafting a grant proposal.

Using a technique called resonance Raman spectroscopy, results can be gotten in as little as a minute simply by shining a special blue laser on a person's palm and observing the results. Thirty seconds of laser, 30 seconds of processing on the computer, and your skin carotenoid levels are there for you and your doctor to talk about.

The test is non-invasive, cheap to administer and quick. It's so easy to use that one researcher managed to check the levels of 60 children in one afternoon. It could even be done while they napped.

It's not perfect; no one knows yet just how long it takes for the levels of carotenoids to build up or fade away in the skin, and they're not sure whether it will work on people with different levels of pigmentation in the skin. The technique?is promising and its?creators are already imagining many applications, but it's still in a fairly early phase and would face years of clinical testing before being deployed widely.

Business for Everyone. Career Resources. Career GuidesEducation ...

Develop your skills and talents to perfection and outsource what you lack. If you have a talent for writing, become the perfect salesletterwriter and if you don't know how to build a web site let an expert do that for you. By using education and outsourcing all tasks in your business are done well and you stay ahead of your competitors.

1. Your Objective and Strategy

If you organize your business you formulate an objective and develop a strategy to reach that objective. You also define the tools that you need to make the strategy work. Like sales letters, budgets, investment in hardware and software, education has to be an integral part of your tool box. When you have the whole picture ready you have a very good idea what skills and abilities you need to bring the journey to a good end. But there is another thing.

2. Changes

We live in a time of rapid changes. Everything around us changes in an incredible speed and it effects us all. There is also an effect on the way we are doing business. New views on economics, technical changes, new and very fast ways of communication through the virtual highway...it all asks for an attitude of anticipation and a refreshment of knowledge, skills and abilities. You must prepare yourself in time for the future. If you don't, you lose because your competitors do and try to take your share of the market.

3. Talents

Everybody has talents. One has a talent for languages and is an excellent copy writer, another has a creative talent and is a very good web designer. Your talents make you good in one task and less suitable for others. You should constantly evaluate yourself; which task is done well and which task needs improvement. However the problem is that with the growing complexity of your business you can't do everything equally well. And to be successful every aspect of your business has to be outstanding.

4. Two Lessons

There is something funny about people. What they don't have they will never get. A lack of talent for mathematics can never be compensated by studying hard. It will always be a weak point. On the other hand, they can improve their real talents into perfection. This holds two lessons for you and these lessons are:

1. Never try to learn something for which you don't have a talent. It takes a lot of time and money to only understand the basics. Time and money can be better used. E.g. for talking with an expert in the field you try and cannot master. This is called outsourcing. Outsourcing to others what they do more efficiently is a successful management strategy and not a sign of weakness. 2. Develop your talents into perfection. Never stop improving yourself in the things you are really good at. Become an expert in what suits you. Education is the only way to improve the knowledge of your own intellectual capital

The bottomline of this article is that you should be well aware of your talents as well as of your limitations when developing your business or anticipating changes. You should always be prepared to act efficiently. Educate yourself to the highest level possible, or outsource tasks.

Voracious kudzu bugs spread across South. Are they boon or bane?

The nubbin-sized Japanese invader arrived on American shores somewhere near Atlanta in 2009. Today it?s eating pesky kudzu across at least three states. Unfortunately, it?s chowing on soybean crops, too.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / May 30, 2012

Somewhere near here, an uninvited guest ? a nubbin-size stinkbug, like a tiny drab ladybug ? arrived on America?s shores in 2009 and found, like invasive species that had come before, a bounty.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

In this case, the so-called kudzu bug found kudzu ? another Asian invader that has become the drapery of the South and has withstood all previous attempts, be they goat or chemical, to control ?the vine that ate the South.?

But as the invading kudzu bug colony has metastasized across at least three states in a mere three years, the kudzu bug has developed a major downside. Their food preferences controlled, robot-like, by symbiotic bacteria, the bugs have suddenly begun to sink their ?piercing-sucking mouthparts? into soybean leaves, as well, reducing yields by as much as half by stressing the plants.

Combined with its reputation as a strong flier and efficient hitchhiker (it likes white cars, especially), the bug has marched from Georgia through the Carolinas. Its movement has quickly drawn comparisons to that of the boll weevil, which nearly destroyed the Southern economy beginning in the 1920s after the insect jumped the border at Brownsville, Texas, in 1892.

?The door is sort of wide open: How far is this insect going to go?? says Dominic Reisig, an entomologist at North Carolina State University, in Raleigh. ?If it moves into the Midwest and really likes it there, we?re in big trouble.?

At the same time, Mr. Reisig concedes, the kudzu bug invasion does have a definitive ?silver lining? that?s become part of the broader academic debate about how, and if, to fight it in a systematic way.

One of the original invasive species, kudzu, a mispronounciation of its Japanese name, kuzu, is a floppy-leafed vine that covers some 8 million acres of countryside, mostly in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, but which has been found as far north as Nova Scotia and in all five boroughs of New York City.

First used as erosion control by Southern farmers, kudzu, which can grow as much as a foot a day in the Dixie heat, quickly got out of control and was named a noxious weed by the US government in 1997.

Given the stubborn spread of kudzu?s choking vines, the arrival of the kudzu bug has left a small USDA lab in Mississippi having to make a tough decision. Government scientists have located a potential kudzu bug assassin ? a parasitic wasp ? but the question of whether to release it has pitted residents of southern Georgia against North Carolina farmers.

In North Carolina, where farmers now get as much as $14 a bushel for soybeans ? compared with $6 a bushel a decade ago ? the bug stands in the way of big paydays as soybean acreage has grown to nearly 2 million acres. But in south Georgia, where soybeans aren?t a major crop, the prospect of a kudzu killer that can cut back 30 percent of the plant?s biomass in a season could be a boon that many residents say should be encouraged.

The rapid spread of the kudzu bug has some longtime Southern scientists remembering the boll weevil epidemic that swept cotton fields, laying to waste family farms and local rural economies. The boll weevil has cost Southern farmers some $13 billion since it first entered the country in the 1920s, capable of traveling 160 miles per year. Its activity, too, was in part curtailed by a parasitic wasp, as well as the spread of fire ants, a natural boll weevil enemy.

First found in the Atlanta area in 2009, the kudzu bug had by last year encroached through most of South Carolina and is expected in most North Carolina counties this summer, as well as up to half of Virginia. It?s likely to have spread to Mississippi and Alabama, as well.

?The stakes are high for farmers, but [the bugs are] also a homeowner nuisance since they like to overwinter in houses,? says Professor Reisig. ?The number of questions I?m getting from homeowners about kudzu bugs is ridiculous.?

Apple CEO on friending Facebook, educating Siri and killing Ping

5 hrs.

Apple CEO Tim Cook sat down for an in-depth?interview during the? All?Things?Digital conference in?Rancho Palos Verdes, California on Tuesday.?Cook discussed where Apple's been and ??more importantly ??where it's going. He also slipped in some hints about the future of Siri, the doom of Ping, and a potential relationship between Apple and Facebook.

Cook started his conversation with his hosts, Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, by declaring that he has never been as amazed by "all the things [he] cannot talk about" right now. "The juices are flowing and we have some incredible things coming out," he explained.

While Cook touched on a range of topics, including Apple's manufacturing plans, during the interview, my ears twitched when he mentioned good ol' Ping.?

Ping ??iTunes Ping, to use its proper name ??is a social network of sorts that's baked into Apple's desktop?media player software. The feature was not received particularly well by most users, who criticized its limited availability, the prevelance of fake celebrity accounts, the removal of Facebook integration, and initial waves of spam.?

When asked about what happened to Ping, Cook explained that it seems as if the average customer is saying that it "isn?t something that [he or she wants] to put a lot of energy into."

"Will we kill it? I don't know. We'll look at that," he remarked before host Swisher quipped that Apple could "totally sell [Ping] to Google+."

While it sounds as if Ping is doomed, there is potentially brighter news when it comes to other social network integration. Cook remarked that "Facebook is a great company" and that he has "great appreciation for them."

?We have great respect for them," he emphasized, again."?I think we can do more with them. Just stay tuned on this one.???

Sounds like Facebook and Apple might be changing their relationship status settings at some point in the near future. Hopefully the social network won't get jealous of all the attention Apple is giving Siri, the personal assistant built into the latest generation iPhone, though. Because Siri is definitely here to stay for a while.

?Customers love it. It?s one of the most popular features of iPhone 4S," Cook told Swisher and Mossberg. "But there?s more that it can do, and we have a lot of people working on this. And I think you will be really pleased with some of the things you?ll see over the coming months on this. We have some cool ideas about what Siri can do. We have a lot going on on this.?

You can catch up on other details from Cook's interview on the All Things Digital website, where Ina Fried?has ?compiled?plenty of notes, quotes and pictures.

VPN Apps: A Simple Mobile Security Solution | TechSling Weblog

By 2014, mobile Internet will take over desktop Internet usage. More people on the mobile web means increased concerns about identity theft, online security, and data security. Fortunately, there?s a mobile solution that exists ass this tech boom continues to explode: a VPN app.

There are tons of security and anti-virus apps out there, but a VPN app provides secure and anonymous web browsing and access to blocked websites in addition to the security protection. It?s online security as your browse the web, not after-the-fact when you download something or scan your device. A VPN app also assigns your device a new IP address, hiding your real one from tracking cookies and hackers.

An example of a great VPN app to consider is OCShield?s Datagard, which is available on the Android platform. Windows Phone and IOS-compatible apps are in the works. What makes this app particularly good is that it won?t slow down your device, increase your data consumption (or the cost), or put a strain on your battery life, all plusses for security apps as a whole.

A VPN app is also a better choice for mobile security than other apps because it is much more comprehensive. A VPN blocks against spyware, malware, and viruses, while preventing you from going to spammy or phishing websites. It?s very much an all-in-one security solution: route your entire web browsing through a third-party whose sole purpose is to protect your and your data. Not bad for a small monthly fee. It?s certainly much easier and cheaper than dealing with a stolen identity or weird credit card charges or a messed up mobile device.

In the future, online security and mobile security could become the same thing, with so many people suing the mobile Internet. But, for now mobile security is something all by itself and one of the best ways to have that security against any and all threats is with a VPN app. It?s better than having multiple security apps that could be a burden to your device, or dealing with a problem like malware or a malicious website because you don?t have the right security measures in place.

Column: Winning's grand, entertaining is enough - KCBD ...

By JIM LITKE
AP Sports Columnist

CHICAGO (AP) - The Cubs skulked back into town with their tails between their legs and plenty to answer for.

Then Monday dawned hot and hazy and by mid-afternoon, the sun was shining, the cold beer was flowing, the wind was blowing out and a fleet of baseballs hitched a ride on the jetstream over the walls at Wrigley Field. By the time the accounting was done, the Cubs had half of the eight home runs and an 11-7 win over the equally hapless Padres.

Throw in a pre-game flight by the eagle Challenger and a seventh-inning rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" by actor Brian Dennehy - in town starring in the play, "The Iceman Cometh" - and it was entertaining enough to send fans out the door wondering where the party was relocating and exactly what they were so upset about in the first place.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum wasn't about to remind them.

"Let's not kid yourself. You lose 12 in a row, you finally win. It's a big relief," he said afterward

Just don't count on celebrating for long. Even in bad years, the Cubs usually don't swoon until June. This year they couldn't even make it to Memorial Day. At this rate, they could be mathematically eliminated by the Fourth of July.

The last six of the Cubs' dozen straight losses came during a seven-day road trip at NL Central rivals Houston and Pittsburgh, two of the only half-dozen or so teams Chicago actually has a chance against. It was like being told to bring back dinner and spending all night at the bar instead, then returning empty-handed and praying fans hadn't changed the locks on the gates at Wrigley Field.

"Patience is something a lot of fans don't have," Sveum had said Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Yet he marveled the way Cubs fans had stuck by his team thus far.

"We all understand -- I'm a huge football fan and I don't understand the Oakland Raiders losing every game. That's the way it is."

In Chicago, maybe.

Even so, Theo Epstein wasn't inclined to press his luck. His title with the Cubs is president of baseball operations, but Chicagoans think of Epstein as the boy genius-general manager who ended the Red Sox' decades-long World Series drought and was brought to town to repeat the trick here. Never mind that he preached patience upon his arrival last October and despite his best efforts, still has only two everyday ballplayers - Starlin Castro and David DeJesus - who could start for most clubs, a barely adequate rotation and a mess in the bullpen.

Even Epstein made it sound like he didn't sign on for this.

"I think we're clearly better than this ... on both fronts, short- and long-term, there's work to do," he said at a hastily arranged news conference.

Unfortunately, though beyond "start scrapping and keep grinding for pride," Epstein was short on specifics on how to improve things over the short term.

"Long term," he added, not much more optimistic, "it underscores the magnitude of the job here and sort of how far we need to go to get where we want to be."

At a century and still counting, Cub fans are either the dopiest of most patient bunch in sports. And over the course of all that losing, they've learned to savor the distractions that are often more interesting than anything the team has been able to cobble together on the field. That's why they happily blame black cats, real goats and imaginary scapegoats like Steve Bartman for the ballclub's unending run of futility.

Winning is great, but in these parts entertaining is still good enough.

Last week's brouhaha was over whether Joe Ricketts, the conservative patriarch of TD Ameritrade and the family that owns the Cubs, was really planning to finance a nasty political attack campaign against President Barack Obama - and whether that would make it harder for the Cubs to gain concessions to modify Wrigley Field from the city's staunchly Democratic mayor, Rahm Emanuel, and the city council.

The week before that, it was the nostalgia kicked up by the retirement of one-time pitching phenom Kerry Wood and an essay in The Wall Street Journal calling for the destruction of Wrigley Field, suggesting the aging shrine was actually the reason for all that losing:

"Destroy it. Annihilate it. Collapse it with the sort of charges that put the Sands Hotel out of its misery in Vegas. Implosion or explosion, get rid of it. That pile of quaintness has to go. ... When a house is haunted, you don't put in a new scoreboard, add ivy, get better food or bigger beers_you move!"

Sounding more like a fan than the Cubs left-fielder, Alfonso Soriano considered the option for the briefest of moments.

"Leave this place? No, never," he said after going 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs. "You saw how much it was jumping when we got it going. Let's see what can happen now. We just had some tough moments before."

Which is, give or take a few years, is how the Cubs still refer to the last century.

Comforting Classic Chicken Noodle ? Tim Hortons ? sunnyyq

on May 28, 2012

Chicken Noodle Soup
~

Not feeling up to cafeteria food, I decided to go and enjoy a bowl of hot soup at Tim Hortons on this slightly chilly day. The Tim Hortons at Richmond Centre was super busy even at 2pm and most people seemed to be getting a late lunch. Despite all the customers and long lines, at least I know the food will be fresh. I was tempted to get a soup, donut, and drink combo as the new S?mores Donut looked very tempting but I was not in the mood for a hot drink. Perhaps next time, I will just get the donut.

The Chicken Noodle Soup came with a fresh oven-baked roll. I love how they have ceramic bowls and even the silverware made it seem like it was not fast food. The soup was warm and I was actually quite pleased with it. Not necessarily low in sodium, it was at least low in fat. The soup was not too oily either, which made it easy to drink. The chicken broth was nice although I did not get much chicken, only a few very tiny pieces. I did, however, get a lot of round carrot slices much to my delight. I did not expect the pasta to be al dente ? it is a soup after all ? and it was not. I was glad, though, that each rounded piece of bow tie pasta was still intact. The red pepper and onion bits was not very obvious in the taste. The soup roll was also nice even though it was not warm. The crust was slightly hardened and chewy and the inside was extremely soft. Overall, I though the meal was quite delicious for a fast food standard. It makes for an affordable, quick lunch on a chilly day so I will definitely go back since cafeteria food is extremely boring and expensive.?

Source: Arrest teams back in place in Virgin Islands bribery scandal, just ?waiting? for Holder to green light action

Arrest teams are now in place in the U.S. Virgin Islands in the wake of the territory?s financial crime and bribery scandal, a source within the Department of Justice told The Daily Caller. According to the source, the teams are now waiting now ?waiting? for Attorney General Eric Holder to give the green light for ?execution.?

?Everything is in place now,? the source said. ?We?re just waiting for them to say ?execute.??

A?Daily Caller investigation?earlier this year unearthed allegations that USVI Gov. John de Jongh?accepted part of at least $20 million in cash bribes in exchange for facilitating the sale of a telecommunications company?to a politically embattled U.S. telecommunications cooperative.

According to the DOJ source ?? who served on a team put in place to arrest finance executives close to that telecommunications deal ?? de Jongh accepted a portion of at least $20 million in cash bribes that floated throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands government.

The bribes, according to the source, were for de Jongh, Virgin Islands Attorney General Vincent Frazer and other Virgin Islands legislators ? all aimed at quashing local concerns about financial irregularities identified on the books of the?National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Cooperative.

The DOJ, the source said, never acted on the sealed indictments related to a years-long criminal scheme involving bank fraud and other financial crimes because two prosecutors on a team of more than 25 also accepted bribes. Five other prosecutors, the source said, were compromised in some other unspecified way.

Since TheDC broke and continued covering the story, however, the source said the investigation got back on track due to political pressure the Obama administration faced from adversaries and supporters ? many of whom receive lucrative tax breaks from the local Virgin Islands government.

As of this weekend, TheDC?s DOJ source said, law enforcement teams are now ready to make arrests. ?The final decision, again, is on Holder?s desk,? the source said. ?The final decision is up to him.?

If and when Holder gives the green light, the source said, USVI senators will be the ?first? to be taken in into custody by law enforcement. That first step, the source said, will take ?less than 24 hours? to complete.

After the senators are taken in, the source said it?s then ?the administrative staff and the governor.? After that, the source said, the final step is law enforcement taking in people from the different financial institutions who were involved in the scandal.

The whole process, from the first step through the last step, will take ?no more than a week,? the source said.

But, the source said, it?s Holder who ultimately ?calls the shots on when it goes.?

?There?s nothing that hasn?t been done that would prevent a nod of confidence,? the source said. ?It?s all up to him now to say, ?yes, go ahead.??

Holder spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler didn?t respond when asked why the attorney general hasn?t given the go-ahead yet. But, TheDC?s DOJ source speculates Holder?s hesitance is for political reasons.

?This election, there?s a lot of players who have been very, very lucrative for [Obama?s campaign] and it will affect a lot of these people if the hammer is dropped,? the source said. ?It isn?t about the wellbeing of the American public. It isn?t about the Department of Justice trying to fight for fiduciary responsibility. It is about political position.?

In late February, Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich issued a carefully worded denial of certain parts of financial crimes and bribery scandal in a letter to Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In that letter, Weich addressed few specifics in TheDC?s reporting or in the request by Grassley that prompted Weich?s reply. Weich?s response makes no mention of the sealed indictments, or of the lengthy investigation the DOJ conducted into CFC?s financial irregularities. Instead, Weich challenged only TheDC?s decision to give its source protection through anonymity, claiming the DOJ has no knowledge of the bribes explored in the story.

?The Department is not aware of facts supporting any allegations of bribery, as purported by the article,? Weich wrote.

After being shown Weich?s letter, TheDC?s source said it was by no means comprehensive and appears to be an attempt to dodge certain questions with careful wording.

?He left out portions of the letter to him from Sen. Grassley, like the indictments, all the things against CFC and everything to that end,? the source said in an interview at the time, while clarifying that proof of the bribery exists ?internally, based on documents.?

(AP) ? The runoff vote for Egypt's next president will pit the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate against the last prime minister to serve under Hosni Mubarak, according to full official results released Monday by the election commission.

Commission chief Farouq Sultan told a news conference that the Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi and Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander and a longtime friend of the ousted leader, were the top two finishers in the first round of voting held on May 23-24.

He said Morsi won 5.76 million votes, or 24.77 percent of the votes, while Shafiq garnered 5.5 million, 23.66 percent.

Finishing a close third was leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabahi with 4.82 million votes, or 20.7 percent.

Sultan said his commission received a total of seven appeals, and rejected all of them. Four of the appeals were dismissed because they had no legal basis, while the other three were not accepted because they were submitted after the deadline, he said.

Morsi and Shafiq have been the most polarizing of the 13 candidates who contested the first round, setting the stage for a fiercely contested runoff June 16-17. Already, both men have begun reaching out to a broad spectrum of political and demographic groups who didn't support them in the first round.

Sultan said that of the 50 million registered voters, 23.67 million cast their ballots, a turnout of 46.4 percent.

(AP) ? Social media sites and blogs have lit up after eagle-eyed viewers spotted a surprise cameo in a Chinese TV documentary about the country's police force: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his now-wife, Priscilla Chan.

The documentary by CCTV was part of a series on Chinese police and high-tech crime-solving methods. A few seconds of footage showing Zuckerberg and Chan walking behind two police officers were shown included in a brief clip posted online by the Hebei province satellite station.

The footage shows the couple wearing the same clothes they were photographed in during a March 27 visit to Shanghai. Zuckerberg wears his custom hooded sweat shirt, this time in brown, and blue jeans, while Chan wears a printed short dress.

The clip shows Zuckerberg looking at the back of the police officers and smiling broadly as the couple walks off-screen. As they are shown, the narrator says: "There is a serious shortage in China's police manpower."

It was not immediately known whether CCTV producers had knowingly inserted Zuckerberg into the documentary. Facebook is blocked in China, along with Twitter, YouTube and other foreign social media, a reflection of the leadership's fear that its power could be threatened by allowing citizens to organize outside of Communist Party control and enjoy unfettered access to information.

Zuckerberg has visited China to vacation and to meet with high-tech entrepreneurs, including a 2010 lunch with Robin Li, CEO of leading Chinese search engine Baidu. He married the 27-year-old Chan on May 20 in a private ceremony at their home, during the same week that he turned 28 and stock for the social network site began trading publicly.

A spokesman for Facebook, based in California, declined to comment Monday on the video clip.

Everything?s faster in Texas? Oregon?s Mike Berry smashes Oregon 400-meter record

AUSTIN, Texas ? Oregon sophomore Mike Berry broke his own school record in the 400 meters, and he was one of 13 Ducks to qualify for the national championships during the NCAA West Regional meet on Friday.

After a solid opening 200 meters, Berry picked it up as he hit the final turn and cleared the entire field heading on to the back stretch. He maintained his speed over the last 50 meters to run the fastest time in the NCAA this season ? 44.86 seconds.

The sophomore from Seattle had set the school record last year at the Pac-12 championships with a time of 44.91.

?I just wanted to get back in race form and run my race and go hard the last 150 meters,? Berry said. ?I wasn?t trying to break a record today, but I?ll take it and can hopefully build on it.?

In the women?s 400 quarterfinals, the Ducks? Phyllis Francis charged hard over the last 50 meters to win her heat in a season-best 52.36 and move on to the NCAA Championships next week. Chizoba Okodogbe was fourth in that heat in a season-best 53.03 and advanced on time. Devin Gosberry was sixth in her heat in a season-best 53.87 but did not advance.

UO sophomore English Gardner flew out of the blocks in the women?s 100 and eased to victory in 11.06 to advance. She had a sizable lead 60 meters into the race before gliding home with the victory.

Also in the 100, senior Lauryn Newson took sixth in her heat in 11.62, and senior Amber Purvis was ninth in her 100 heat in 11.70.

In the men?s 100, freshman Arthur Delaney was fifth in his heat in 10.41, and junior Joeal Hotchkins tied for sixth in his heat in 10.39. Neither runner advanced.

All five Oregon runners did advance from the 800.

Elijah Greer had another commanding performance in the men?s 800 to win his race.

He stayed in the pack through the first lap, before moving around the outside to take the lead with 250 meters to go. No one could cover as the junior from Lake Oswego won in 1:48.38.

Boru Guyota also earned a trip to Iowa with a fifth-place showing in his heat. His time, 1:48.98, was the 12th and final qualifier.

For the women, the Ducks had a runner-up finish in the first heat by Laura Roesler and a 2-3 finish from Anne Kesselring and Claudia Francis in the second heat to advance.

Roesler was in a tight race won by Nachelle Mackie of Brigham Young in 2:02.64. Roesler was next in a season-best 2:04.48.

In the second heat, Kesselring ran a conservative race up front before finishing second in 2:06.42.

Freshman Claudia Francis, meanwhile, had to charge around the curve and then put on a final kick over the last 20 meters to claim the third spot in 2:06.55.

The women wrapped up the night in impressive fashion, advancing Lanie Thompson, Kimber Mattox and Taylor Wallace in the steeplechase.

Restaurant Industry: About car rental companies and making the ...

Any rental companies that have a number of vehicle to rent will be looking to fit you into one of their set packages. By default, if the booking is imprecise, you'll find yourself arbitrarily dumped into their "standard" vehicles on the "usual" terms. Perhaps this will work well for you. But when it proves a bad guess, you need to unpick the agreement when you arrive at the collection point without causing a major war. Remember you need the company to give you a vehicle at a good price so upsetting the local representatives before you start is not the best way to win. Indeed, you should have done all the heavy lifting by email before you set off for the collection point.

The first question you should be asking is how long are you looking to rent the vehicle for. If this is literally one or two days, you will nearly always do better with one of the national or international companies. The large companies always carry a big fleet of vehicles of different sizes so can more easily fit you in for short periods. When you approach a "local" company, it will want you to take the vehicle for a minimum period, usually a week. If you insist on a shorter period of hire from a small company, you will be denied any possibility of a discount. Companies that rent out on predictable cycles can be left with a vehicle sitting in the lot waiting for the start of the next period of hire to start.

The next question to be thinking about is the distance you are looking to drive. If this is going to be within the immediate area, going local will be safe. Should you breakdown or hit problems, people can come and rescue you. But if you're planning to take off into the boondocks, a national company is going to give you more protection because, hopefully, you will always be within range of a branch office or the national company can tap a local garage to give roadside assistance. Alternatively, ensure you have membership of the national roadside rescue services in the countries you propose to visit. You always need to be just one cell phone call away from help.

The best deals are always obtained by asking about the discounts they are willing to give. It's a rule of life. If you don't ask, you never get a discount. If this is going to be a regular event, ask about a loyalty program. Most are free but, some times, you pay a small amount to join. Once in, you get a discount on all the bookings you make. The same applies if you're already a member of frequent flier programs or your credit card provider has a local promotion. In the other direction, always ask about any terms entitling the car rental companies to impose charges or fees. For example, what are the no-show rules? Some companies charge you only if you fail to collect at all. Others charge you if you're late. So, if you're stuck in traffic on your way to the collection point, are you calm or is there frustration because a fee will be imposed unless you can get there in the next five minutes? Car rental companies like the chance to add to your bill. Know what you're getting into before you sign up.
