LONDON ? The large role the small town of Wootton Bassett has played in honoring fallen British soldiers has ended with a sunset ceremony Wednesday.

The market town about 85 miles (135 kilometers) west of London has earned fame throughout Britain ? and praise from the queen and prime minister ? for its solemn shows of support when the remains of soldiers killed in Afghanistan are driven through town.

Each time a soldier's remains pass by, normal life in the town of 11,000 comes to a halt. Veterans and soldiers in uniform stand at attention, police outriders escort the hearse and stop in the town center, giving families a chance to lay flowers on the vehicle's roof, over the coffin. But that role is over now that the nearby Royal Air Force Lyneham base is closing and Wootton Bassett will no longer be on the route between the repatriation military base and the coroner's office.

The streets of the town were full as Wootton Bassett's Union Jack was lowered at sunset to mark the end of an era in the town's history. The flag was folded, blessed and will be placed on the altar of a local church overnight, then passed on to Brize Norton Royal Air Force base in Oxfordshire, which will on Thursday become the base where planes carrying fallen soldiers will land.

Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday praised Wootton Bassett's spontaneous demonstrations of support for British troops that began in 2007 and have continued each time a soldier has been killed.

"My message to the people of Wootton Bassett is a really big, heartfelt thank you on behalf of the government and the whole country," he said.

Cameron said residents "have done our country proud with the respect and admiration and passion they have shown for our armed forces and those who have tragically fallen in battle in Afghanistan and elsewhere."

Queen Elizabeth II also honored the town earlier this year by formally changing its name to Royal Wootton Bassett.

The town's residents began their efforts four years ago with only the humblest organization. Local shops spread the word by posting notices in their windows, and the local branch of the Royal British Legion made phone calls and sent emails to let people know when a procession was expected.

The local pub started setting aside a room each time so that family and friends of the slain troops could have privacy while they waited for the cortege to make its sad journey.

Officials said bereaved families would make use of a newly built repatriation center at the air force base in Oxfordshire.

"This center has been designed with the needs of the families and loved ones of those being repatriated at its heart," Brize Norton Station Commander Dom Stamp said. "All along this has been of paramount importance and I am confident that the facilities we now have will assist us in our efforts to ensure we provide the maximum support at what is an extremely traumatic time."

Research aims to starve breast cancer cells

The most common breast cancer uses the most efficient, powerful food delivery system known in human cells and blocking that system kills it, researchers report.

This method of starving cancer cells could provide new options for patients, particularly those resistant to standard therapies such as tamoxifen, Georgia Health Sciences University researchers said.

Human estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells thriving in a Petri dish or transplanted onto mice die when exposed to a drug that blocks the transporter, called SLC6A14, said Dr. Vadivel Ganapathy, Chairman of GHSU's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

"It basically starves the cancer cell," said Ganapathy, corresponding author of the study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The transporter can carry 18 of the known 20 amino acids, fuel all cells need in some combination. Amino acids enable cells to make proteins, which they need to function and survive. The cell type determines its amino acid needs and delivery system. Rapidly growing, dividing estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer needs nearly every amino acid so it makes the smart choice of utilizing the transporter that can deliver the biggest load, Ganapathy said.

SLC6A14 is the only transporter known to carry all 10 essential amino acids, essential because the body can't make them so they have to be delivered via the bloodstream from food. The transporter also takes eight of the nonessential amino acids along for the ride, Ganapathy said.

And it is a fast ride. The transporter has three energy sources instead of the usual one or two, he said.

Interestingly, SLC6A14 is expressed at low levels in most of the body. "There are specialized features of this transport system which could be used by every cell to its advantage but they do not seem to do that. It's expressed only at low levels in normal tissues," Ganapathy noted. While that may seem like a loss for healthy cells, it bolsters the cancer-fighting potential for drugs that block SLC6A14 by making it a more specific cancer target. "Since the normal cells do not depend on this transporter, you can use a drug that selectively blocks it to target cancer cells" Ganapathy said.

The compound they used is alpha-methyl-DL-tryptophan, already used in humans for short periods when they are getting a PET scan in certain areas of the brain. When the researchers treated estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells with it or put it in the drinking water of the mice with the cells, rapid growth stopped and the cancer cells died. Further studies showed alpha-methyl-DL-tryptophan seemed to impact only cells expressing the SLC6A14 transport system. Even another type of breast cancer, estrogen receptor-negative, wasn't impacted.

But what happens at the next GOP?debate if, instead of this liberal woman, it's Michele Bachmann who decides to challenge Romney, on (say) his healthcare law? And what happens if she gets under his skin just like this woman did? This one was easy for Romney, but he still seemed uncomfortable and not quite sure how to handle the situation -- lots of forced smiling, stiff language, and a tone that could be construed as condescending. Twice he called her "madam."

If anything, it reminded me of a 2002 gubernatorial debate in Massachusetts when Romney grew frustrated with his opponent, Shannon O'Brien, and called her attacks on his abortion rhetoric "unbecoming." That particular moment is at the 4:30 mark in this video:

Romney's "unbecoming" line caused a stir in the race's closing stretch. O'Brien even held a press conference the next day with then-Sen. Hillary Clinton and said that "I certainly think that he wouldn't use the term 'unbecoming' if he were speaking about a male opponent." Of course, Romney had his defenders, too, and the controversy didn't cost him the election, which he won by 7 points.

But try picturing a similar exchange -- over abortion, healthcare or something else -- between Romney and Bachmann. She presses him, he gets irritated and makes a remark that sounds somewhat condescending, and she calls him on it. Given that the GOP's base likes and trusts Bachmann more than it likes and trusts Romney, it could cause a real headache for Romney.

In the two debates they've participated in so far, there's been very little interaction between Romney and Bachmann. But that figures to change. Chances are she'll end up going after him, and he'll have to engage. It'll be very interesting to hear what comes out of his mouth.

In the middle of a popular New York City toy store stood a very tearful little boy. He looked no more than 5 years old as he increased his tearful pleas. The young son (let's call him Sam) screamed, "If you don't get me this toy, then I'm not going to talk to you, and I'm not going to sleep in your bed anymore!"

While the bed issue is a topic for another article, Sam's father trying, in an unnaturally calm, saccharine and weak state, to reason theoretically with his impulsive, temper-infused son was clearly not working.

"Sam," said the dad, "this is a very expensive store, and your birthday is right around the corner, so now is just not the right time to get you this kind of gift."

Sam, for his part, wasn't having any of it, so his threats against his father continued -- relentlessly. He stood his ground and wasn't having any of his father's logic. He simply continued with his own verbal diatribe.

"Then I'm not going to love you or talk to you anymore!"

I really had to remove myself from this scene or I would have been in serious danger of putting in my two cents, which would have been an unwise move, because I give psychological analyses on national TV.

My impulse, however, was to talk on behalf of this dad and say, "Is this a promise? You won't talk to me anymore?" (How about starting now?!) I found the father equally infuriating. This child didn't need to be given reason; he needed parameters. One could even argue that he needed a firm hand in this instance. Sometimes, children push so hard because they need to know their limits and, on some level, want those limits to be enforced.

My thoughts wandered back to a moment in my psychoanalytical training when a fellow student, a father, spoke with much sadness and regret over spanking his daughter when she was a child. His child had recently told him how emotionally damaging this was for her. I was quite shocked by his daughter's extreme upset, because I was a child who was spanked all the time! My fellow classmate, this remorseful father, was very surprised as I talked fondly and humorously about my childhood memories of getting spanked. He was very surprised that I didn't feel particularly scarred by these physical punishments -- not at all! I explained to him that I felt very loved by my parents, even as they were intermittently exasperated by me and felt the need show this feeling by a spanking. Who knows? Maybe I even deserved it back then.

Now, as the parent of two children ages 9 and 12, I don't choose to embrace my parents' physical style of punishment. Each of my children may have been spanked once in their lives, once when my son slapped me across the face, and once when my daughter was very young, completely out of control and in real need of some major limit-setting. Since then, time-outs, strong verbal limit-setting and a sense of humor seem to do the trick for them and their blessed temperaments, which is not from my side of the family, to be sure!

Do I believe in spanking? No, not really, but when carried out in a thoughtful way and not out of parental angst, spanking can work as an effective disciplining tool with certain types of children. However, I don't think reasoning with an unreasonable 5-year-old who is threatening not to love you or talk to you unless you buy him the whim of the moment is the right way to go, either.

This child needed some firm comments from his father, such as, "Stop your begging, you're not getting this toy, and you're not to threaten me, either. You are not going to get this toy at this time, and we are leaving this store -- now!"

The entire point of setting limits is to prepare our children for the world they will live in. If they do not get discipline from their parents who love and care for them the most, then they will get it from far harsher people in the world that they will have to learn to navigate, and that could prove to be a very unpleasant experience.

Setting limits in a strong and effective way is loving your children, and on a certain level, your kids know that, too. They realize that parents who care enough about them to stand up to them and set limits are mature adults doing their parental job: providing love, care and preparation for the adult world that their children will one day enter. Parents who do give love along with limits are preparing their kids for life and the real world, which, at times, is not always so loving or easy. As parents, our job is to prepare our kids to live successfully in their personal world as well as in the outside world, which comes complete with rules, regulations and imperfections. And this training begins with us as parents.

Even in less secularised Catholic countries, non-religion is statistically significant, with 11% in Poland, 30% in Italy and 46% in Portugal.

This is not a reflection of levels of atheism in these countries ? in fact the numbers who classify themselves as atheist remain marginal. ?Non-religion?, however, can be understood in a broader sense as meaning atheism, agnosticism, non-religious secularism, or simply religious indifference ? as well as other outlooks that are harder to classify and record.

Understood this way, the number of non-religious people extends into the hundreds of millions in Europe alone. Yet in spite of this, non-religion had attracted little serious study by social scientists before the turn of this century, and it remains of marginal interest in many quarters. This is partly because non-religion has been another casualty of the dominating Enlightenment view of modernity ? which sees modernization as involving the steady rationalisation of peoples and thought, causing, in turn, religion to decline.

This view of modernity has been widely challenged since it emerged, often in critiques which defend religion as having an important role in modern society. Amongst other things, these critics contend that religion is less vulnerable than we had anticipated it would be, and that it is potentially more rational than we thought. Interestingly, this becomes a debate purely about religion itself ? it reinforces the idea that religion is the sole issue at stake and remains a singular oddity that needs to be explained.

A small, but growing number of non-religion scholars take a different view: We argue that the study of religion does not have to be about religion alone. This sounds like a contradiction in terms, of course, but actually it reflects how far language has become strait-jacketed by the idea that religion is a unique phenomenon. We are so accustomed to the idea that religion is singular and without alternative, that we have yet to developed a more generalised term for the collected perspectives of religion, spiritualism and non-religion ?as, for example, we use the term ?gender? to include men, women, intersex and transgendered positions.

This is not just an academic issue or one of quibbling about categories. The tradition of treating non-religion as a non-entity means that we gloss over some significant social issues that diverse and pluralist societies should be addressing.

One example is the dialogue between faith and non-faith groups. Taking the idea of non-religion seriously involves taking seriously the idea that religious and non-religious communities co-exist and are likely to co-exist indefinitely. The way these groups interact has, in a globally communicative world, become important in national and international politics, civil society and personal relationships. They can either treat one another with tolerance and understanding, or with fear and misunderstanding. A non-religious position is never, however, a position of neutrality.

The idea that religion is something, and non-religion is nothing, can have different practical implications. It is, on the one hand, related to the idea that religion is strange and problematic whereas non-religion is normal and benign. On the other hand, the same stance can also lead to the view that religion is diverse, rich, communitarian, meaningful and therefore positive; while non-religion lacks the same capacity to enrich human life. Thus, by separating the two on this basis, we give both sides a legitimate cause for grievance and impair attempts to facilitate more positive relationships between them.

Given the lack of research and discussion about non-religion, there are important and urgent questions to be asked about it. For example, cognitive anthropologists and psychologists studying the cognitive conditions for theism have begun to notice that their work is incomplete unless they also understand the cognitive conditions of non-theism. In social anthropology and sociology, researchers have begun to explore the role of symbolism and communal aspects of non-religious life, helping us to understand more about contemporary human societies and challenging the view that symbolism and ceremony have a special relationship with religion.

For students of politics and international relations, questions relate to the relationship between non-religious perspectives and political secularism, liberalism and democracy ? the same questions, in fact, that are currently being asked of religion. And in religious studies in general, establishing what constitutes non-religion is helping to answer fundamental questions about the nature of religion itself.

All of this is of practical significance. Answering such questions will impact upon people?s understandings of themselves and others. Given the importance of inter-cultural and intra-cultural dialogue in diverse, pluralist societies, the existence of a large, silent majority ? as the non-religious are, especially in Europe ? is a problem. Initial findings from my own research, for example, indicate that different non-religious groups perceive religiosity in different ways. Once stopped, refineries usually need 10 to 21 days to get back up and running at full tilt. That means gasoline supplies could drop and prices rise, Lipow said.

"You want my advice: you should be filling up your car right now," he said. "If you haven't, you should."

At the pump, gasoline prices were nearly unchanged Wednesday at a national average of $3.575 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. A gallon of gasoline has fallen 41 cents from its peak this year near $4 on May 5, but it's still 87.3 cents more expensive than the same time last year.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 3.77 cents to $2.9866 per gallon and gasoline futures rose 2.74 cents to $2.7744 per gallon. Natural gas lost 6 cents at $3.941 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Unlikely coincidence helps plane crash survivors

RESOLUTE BAY, Nunavut (AP) ? Within minutes after the Boeing 737-200 passenger jet slammed into a hill in Canada's remote Arctic region, military helicopters were landing at the crash site to evacuate the three survivors of the crash that killed 12 people. In an unlikely coincidence, several hundred military personnel in the region preparing for a mock airliner crash training exercise suddenly found themselves plunged into a real rescue mission.

First Air charter flight 6560 crashed Saturday afternoon in foggy weather as it was approaching the airport near the tiny hamlet of Resolute Bay in the Arctic territory of Nunavut. Local residents rushed to the scene in their all-terrain vehicles only to find a massive military rescue operation under way.

Officials say the rapid response may have increased the chances for the three survivors among the 15 people on board the plane which crashed in rough terrain in one of the most remote regions of Canada.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with those affected by Saturday's tragic plane crash," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement. "Thanks to the herculean efforts of first responders, including members of the Canadian Armed Forces, lives were saved that otherwise might have been lost."

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Constable Angelique Dignard said two of the survivors ? a seven-year-old girl and a 48-year-old man ? were transported to a hospital in Ottawa from a medical facility in the Nunavut territorial capital of Iqaluit. A 23-year-old woman remains in a hospital in Iqaluit.

Dignard said all three were listed in stable condition Sunday, but she would not comment on the nature of their injuries.

National Defense spokesman Daniel Blouin said the military had been planning to stage a mock airliner crash rescue on Monday. A temporary base had been set up just outside Resolute Bay, about 1.2 miles (two kilometers) from the crash site. That enabled the military to reach the crash site within 10 minutes of the accident, Blouin said.

He said almost 500 military personnel were already in the community to take part in the military's annual northern training exercise, Operation Nanook, which has now been suspended until at least Tuesday.

"It's not often that this level of response is here at this location," Blouin said. "The fact that we were able to get four birds in the air literally within minutes of the crash happening and use the helicopters to bring the people back to our unit medical center, to say that it helped is certainly safe to say."

Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak said the outcome for the survivors could have been worse if the military had not been there.

"They were just hours away from practicing what actually happened in real life," Aariak said. "It's good to hear the response team living in Resolute Bay had extra help from the military because in such remote communities it is always hard to get the level of response that is required."

First Air spokesman Christopher Ferris, his voice near breaking, said the cause of the accident has not been determined yet. He said all four crew members were killed.

"Our thoughts and focus are with the families and friends of the passengers and crew and the community of Resolute Bay," said Ferris, who also thanked the Canadian military for their immediate response.

On its website, First Air says it serves the cargo and travel needs of Canada's Arctic region, connecting 30 remote northern communities with some of Canada's bigger cities.

Police have yet to identify any of those killed in the crash. A neighbor identified one of the victims as Ches Tibbo, a carpenter from Harbour Mille, Newfoundland, who worked on projects in the Arctic region. Pam Pardy Ghent said her neighbor had survived a December 2008 plane crash on a flight from Resolute Bay that attempted to land at Cambridge Bay, and spent four hours waiting for help with temperatures dropping to -44 F (-41 C).

Ferris said the airline is co-operating with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, whose investigators arrived at the scene shortly after Saturday's crash because they also were in the region for the military exercise. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team to assist in the investigation because a U.S.-made aircraft was involved.

The RCMP said the plane's two black flight recorder boxes had been recovered from the crash site. Forensic identification teams were working to identify the bodies and assist in the investigation.

Aziz Kheraj, the owner of the nearby South Camp Inn, said he had chartered the flight from Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories to Resolute Bay every three weeks for the past six months to bring food and passengers to his hotel.

"It's a bad time," said Kheraj. "We lost quite a few people on that plane, so it's pretty tough. We lost six staff."

Kheraj told The Associated Press by telephone that his two granddaughters were on the plane, but only one of them survived ? the 7-year-old girl hospitalized at Ottawa General Hospital.

Ferris said counselors have been deployed to provide support to residents of Resolute, Yellowknife and other main stations in the airline's network.

First Air said in a news release that the plane last reported communication at 12:40 p.m. local time when it was about five miles (eight kilometers) from the Resolute Bay airstrip.

Witnesses have said there was thick fog in the area Saturday. An airport worker, who wouldn't give his name, said there was a low cloud ceiling at the time of the crash, which lifted about 10 minutes afterward. Witnesses said the wreckage was strewn across a hill near the airport runway.

Resolute Bay is a tiny community of about 250 people tucked in a shallow, gravelly bay along the northernmost leg of the Northwest Passage. Its population is mostly aboriginal natives known as Inuit people. Nunavut territory has a population of about 33,000 spread out through 25 communities.

"Individuals in each of our 25 communities are closely connected through family and friends so whenever there is a tragedy like this everyone in all of our communities feels it so much," Aariak said.

Harper was scheduled to travel to Resolute Bay on Monday on his annual trip to the Arctic, but the prime minister now plans to fly there on Tuesday to pay his respects to community leaders and first responders.

Canada's Governor General David Johnston and his wife Sharon, who are currently touring Nunavut, were in Resolute on Saturday morning for a previously planned visit. Johnston's scheduled Sunday events were cancelled. Johnston is the representative of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as Canada's head of state.

Despite its remote location far above the treeline, Resolute is known as the nexus of the North, a frequent staging community for scientific, military and commercial expeditions. It's also the base for the Canadian Polar Continental Shelf project, a federal institution that handles logistics for Arctic researchers. Resolute is also the planned location of the army's new winter warfare school.
