Djokovic eases through Rome Masters

Novak Djokovic got his French Open build-up back on a firmer footing as he began the defence of his Rome Masters title with a convincing win over Bernard Tomic.

Top seed Djokovic joined Rafael Nadal in making scathing criticisms of the blue clay in Madrid, where he was beaten by Janko Tipsarevic last week. He needed just 69 minutes to claim victory back on the traditional red clay.

Djokovic was joined the third round by fourth seed Andy Murray, who squeezed through 6-1 4-6 7-5 against Argentina's David Nalbandian, who had been a break up early in the deciding set before the Scot rallied.

Sixth seed David Ferrer beat Fernando Verdasco 6-3 7-6 (7/3) in an all-Spanish encounter, and fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga moved through with a straightforward 6-3 6-2 win over Serbia's Viktor Troicki.
