Make Your Home As Energy Efficient As Possible | Olger Fallas ...

Energy efficiency is a popular topic at the moment, and it seems that everyone you speak to is currently obsessed with running a greener and more energy efficient home. This is good news of course ? being more energy efficient means saving money and it means helping the planet, but it does also have its downsides ? one of the most pressing of which is that it requires a lot of effort and can involve spending a fair bit of money up-front.

3D Green Energy

For instance if you want to be really energy efficient then one of the most popular ways to achieve this status is by investing in solar panels for your roofing. Of course this is a great way to save on your energy bill and to use fewer fossil fuels, because it means you?ll be getting some of your energy from the sun rather than paying for it to come from a big power plant somewhere. At the same time though it also means covering your roof with reflective panels, it means spending the money involved in that upfront and then again to maintain them, and it means setting it all up and looking into the legal aspects and how you can sell some of your energy back.

The danger here is that we spend too long fixating on these major changes and overlook some of the smaller and easier things we can do to improve our efficiency. It?s actually these ?minor? changes though that are potentially the most effective when it comes to making major and lasting savings ? it all adds up.

Here then are a few easy ways to improve your energy efficiency right now and without spending the Earth to save it? (see what I did there?).

Equipment Efficiency

The efficiency of your equipment is going to make a big impact on how much energy you use up throughout the year, and simply buying an air conditioner or a heater with a higher efficiency rating can make all the difference.

Of course replacing your air conditioning now may not be particularly viable, but there are ways you can still improve your appliances in terms of their energy consumption and the most important thing to do here is to ensure you are constantly maintaining them. There are a number of ways you can accomplish this. For instance you should make sure you are regularly bleeding your radiators, and you should ensure that your boiler is regularly checked over as pressure can build up there too.

Likewise if you have a furnace or a clothes drier you should make sure you occasionally clear out the filters, while you might also want to get chemical cleaning for the heat exchangers in your fridge or air conditioning. All this can make a big difference to the amount of energy your appliances use, and you won?t need to change anything you do.

Heat

Nest at Home

Having efficient heating will also help you to keep your property at the right temperature. This is an important way to save yourself money too, as keeping your property warm will avoid a lot of problems. Let your home get too cold and eventually your walls will reach dew point temperature at which point they become very difficult to warm up. Likewise they will attract condensation which will drain the heat from your property and you may find that mould sets in too which can be very difficult to get rid of. You may think that leaving your heating off would be the best way to save yourself money, but in reality it will cause a lot more problems. Use a thermostat, keep your rooms well insulated (this can even just mean using heavier curtains and lots of curtains) and try to keep your heat consistent.

Hot Water

Boiling hot water is one of the biggest expenses for your property, and the condensation this creates causes further problems. The solution is to heat your hot water on a timer, or to use an electric heater for your showers. Likewise you should avoid letting hot water stand, and you should always run the cold water before adding the hot. If you have children, then try to get them to share bath water with each other and maybe you, and if you have a gym membership consider showering there occasionally instead of at home. You pay enough for it!
