You had the feeling that once Washington Redskins? owner Daniel Snyder uttered the word ?never? when talking about changing his team?s nickname, that he just might re-fuel a debate. People don?t like when words like ?never? get thrown around, it just sounds so final and defiant.
Most football fans agree that the nickname isn?t ideal, but that it?s certainly not meant in negative way towards Native Americans. The majority of Washington fans still want to keep the nickname according to the latest polls, but now there?s mounting pressure from outside sources to banish it.
U.S. House Representative Eni F.H. Faleomavaega feels very strongly that ?Redskins? should go. He had this to say in Wednesday?s House session:
?Mr. Speaker, it?s time the National Football League and the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, face the reality that the continued use of the word ?Redskin? is unacceptable. It is a racist, derogatory term, and patently offensive to Native Americans.?
He went on to say that once the American people learn how offensive the term really is, that they?ll understand why it can?t ever be used again.
This latest opinion from the U.S. House really goes to show how big of an issue this is becoming. I can and can?t believe that it?s still in place in 2013, just because of how PC everything else has become. The reality is that unless you?re a Native American, which the vast majority of people in this county are not, you really don?t know how if feels to hear that word.
It?s a very tricky debate, but I believe the House should stay out of it. They simply have better things to worry about than pro football nicknames. This is ultimately an issue that should be settled between the NFL, Daniel Snyder and Native American representatives. These are the three sides that must be involved, and if one side isn?t happy with the nickname, it must go.
Just how long that will take to happen? I doubt the name makes it another 10 years?
