Military furloughs start Monday

Starting Monday steep furloughs will slam military workers.

That means more than 700 people at Letterkenny Army Depot in Franklin County, the Defense Depot in Cumberland County and Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County will lose 20-percent of their pay, for the next eleven weeks.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told CBS news that to meet the budget goals of sequestration, he had to reduce the civilian payroll or further reduce the military itself.

Furloughs for Department of Defense workers are happening, because of the automatic spending cuts, after Congress failed to reach a budget deal. CBS news reports the furloughs apply across the board to civilian workers.

" And by the way, the furlough process does include contractors; it includes companies, it includes acquisitions, it includes contracts," said Chuck Hagel, Secretary of Defense.

But there are exemptions.?For example, military commissaries will close an extra-day a week, but not military day care centers.

But all those lost wages will harm local economies. Communities near the nation's largest military bases, will lose tens of millions of dollars.
