BOUNTIFUL -- South Davis Recreation Center Ice Sheet was the scene of a skating event filled with Olympic spirit Thursday evening.
Performers and audience members had a chance to relive memories while recognizing the 10-year anniversary of the Salt Lake City Olympics. They also used the opportunity to dust off their Olympic coats, berets, cow bells and pins.
Music from the opening ceremonies filled the arena as skaters glided across the rink carrying flags from various countries. They were followed by a performance from the Utah Figure Skating Club and original skaters from the 2002 opening ceremonies.
"It was good to hear the Olympic music, because there is something about it that makes you feel emotional," said Kris Sherard, skating director for the rink. "We had such a fun time during the Olympics, so it is great to have the memories come back and some of the skaters that performed there bring the atmosphere back."
Marcia Owen, an ice dancer from West Haven, had the chance to perform in the opening ceremonies 10 years ago with her husband. They wore their costumes and enjoyed performing in the commemoration event.
"I didn't really anticipate we would ever be using our costumes again, but it's exciting that it still fits and that I'm still skating 10 years later," said Owen, who is now 62 and hoped the audience would pick up on the energy and excitement. "I would like people to remember how we worked together as a group to put the Olympics together."
When the Olympic Legacy Committee announced the 10th anniversary celebration, South Davis Recreation Center jumped at the chance to share in those memories, especially given the number of skaters training at the arena in preparation for future Olympics.
With 30 days to put the event together, event coordinator Michelle Thomson was up for the challenge.
"I think it's an exciting time for us to recognize the past," Thomson said. "Ten years ago the challenge came for us to light the fire within, so we want to show Davis County what we have done with that challenge."
Organizers were able to showcase some of the talent that has grown from their arena in the last 10 years, including 12-year-old Rachel Crawford, of Ogden, who trains two to three hours a day, six days a week, in hopes of making it to the 2018 Olympics in South Korea.
"Since I get to be a part of this event, it makes me look forward to when I can go to the Olympics," Rachel said. "I know that I have to work really hard for it, and I'm willing to do that."
The event brought a large crowd hoping to rekindle the Olympic spirit. Dee Christensen, of Salt Lake City, has a granddaughter who figure skates, so she was enjoying the evening.
"It's fun to come and see the tribute to the Olympics, since it was such a historic event, and fun to celebrate it 10 years later."
