Chennai, Feb 12 : An UNESCO Chair in Bio Ethics was established at the SRM University here today. The Chair was established by UNESCO Asia Pacific Bio Ethics Network for Education, Science and Technology.
The Chair at the SRM University would be the Lead Chair of India and it would also act as the Secretariat of the Asia Pacific Bio Ethnics Netowrk. "It will also act as the India Lead Office of the Asia Pacific Bioethics Network", SRM University Vice-Chancellor M Ponnavaikko said.
To mark the establishment of the Chair, a special Guest lecutre on 'Globalisation and Societies in Transition--the bioethical issues, challenges' was organised. Prof Dr Russel F D'Souza, Director of Clinical Trials and Bipolar Programe, NorthernPsychiatric Research, Melbourne, Asutralia delivered the Guest lecture.
Speaking on the occasion, SRM University Registrar N Sethuraman announced that Dr D'Souza was appointed as the Honorary Professor of Eminence Bio-Ethics of SRM University. "In recognition of his recognition and rich experience in the field of research and bioethics, the SRM University Management is happy to announce that it is our privilege to appoint Dr D'Souza as the Honorary Professor of Eminence Bioethics", he added.
He said Dr D'zouza would assist the students and faculty of SRM University in taking up various research activities. The main of establishing the Chair was to develop a course in bioethics in medical research, using multi model routes like online and contact classes.
Mr Ponnavakko said the objective of the chair was also to develop inclusive medical curriculum with a pragmatic focus on bioethics. "In recent decades, medical education curricula have undergone many modifications. 'In spite of these changes,ethics education has not received adequate attention in medical schools thorughout the world", he said. "In order to improve the relationship between the doctors and patients, a new curriculum will be developed which will be disseminated to other universities and medical schools", he added.
