Dinosaurs had teeth to spare -- lots of them

Dinosaurs almost bankrupted the tooth fairy. New research shows that the lumbering plant-eaters called sauropods produced new teeth as often as twice per month and had up to nine backup teeth in a single tooth socket.

While the fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex is known as the king of the dinosaurs, the sauropods were the real royalty. These creatures, including the childhood favorite Apatosaurus (previously known as Brontosaurus), were the largest animals that ever lived on land.

"A big T. rex is maybe 40 or 45 feet tall, but a big sauropod pushes 100 feet long or more," said Michael D'Emic, a vertebrate paleontologist at Stony Brook University in New York and lead author of the teeth study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One.

Having never let go of a childhood fascination with dinosaurs, D'Emic wondered how the enormous size ? and hence diet ? of sauropods may have affected the evolution of their jaws and teeth. Since they were avowed vegetarians, D'Emic assumed their teeth would be well worn from munching copious amounts of tough plant matter.

To investigate, he and his team scoured dozens of museum collections in search of sauropod jaws. Teeth were easy to come by, but persuading a museum curator to let him tear apart an entire jaw was difficult.

"I had to search collections for jaws that had a lot of teeth but that were ratty or fragmentary," D'Emic said.

He lucked out, finding a Camarasaurus jaw dug up in southern Utah and a Diplodocus jaw from Colorado. Both animals lived about 150 million years ago in the Jurassic period, and were types of sauropods that lived side by side.

The next step was to break apart the jaws and remove not only the 30-odd visible teeth individually, but whatever backups were embedded in the sockets below.

In other words, he needed to pull some teeth.

"That had to be done by a professional, somebody with a surgeon's hands and patience," D'Emic said.

Patience indeed. Behind every visible tooth, the Camarasaurus had three backup teeth lined up and ready for use. The Diplodocus had even more ? five spares behind each visible tooth.

It took six months for the dino-dentist to extract the teeth, embed them in a special resin, saw them up, mount them on slides, sand and polish them by hand and then photograph them for study.

In addition to the large number of teeth in the pipeline, D'Emic and his team were interested in how quickly those teeth would come in.

Cross-section images revealed lines in each tooth's dentin, the layer below the enamel. Since a new layer grows each day, the researchers could figure out the age of a tooth by counting those lines, much like counting rings on a tree stump. And by looking at the intervals in age between successive teeth in a socket, they could estimate how quickly teeth were replaced.

Camarasaurus, with its larger, broader-crowned teeth, had a new tooth come in about once every two months. Diplodocus, with smaller, narrower teeth, had a replacement about once a month.

When the scientists used a mathematical model to extrapolate their findings to other types of sauropods, they estimated that one genus called Nigersaurus replaced its teeth every two weeks, with nine spares for every tooth.

D'Emic also noticed that more recent sauropods had evolved smaller, narrower teeth that got replaced a lot faster, like Diplodocus. He wondered: Why the shift?

Sauropods didn't actually chew their salad ? they clipped it off with their teeth and then swallowed it whole. Perhaps having teeth turn over faster kept them fresh for the hard work of cutting vegetation off trees or bushes, D'Emic said.

Another theory is that given the limited utility of its teeth, Diplodocus invested its bodily resources in other tissues, preferring a quantity-over-quality approach.

"All the tooth had to do was snip," D'Emic said.

Finally, there was the question of how two plant-eating dinosaurs the size of a mega-yacht could coexist in the same environment. D'Emic thinks the answer lies in the teeth.

If Diplodocus grazed vegetation close the ground, it would have accidentally eaten a fair amount of dirt ? and the sauropod's narrow teeth could have been an adaptation for this grittier diet, he said. With Diplodocus eating plants down low, Camarasaurus could have foraged up high, providing enough room for everyone.

Paul Sereno, a University of Chicago paleontologist who was not involved in the study, said he found D'Emic's argument convincing.

"Last night I had a salad that I grew in my own yard for the first time, and I really had to wash the lettuce carefully, because there's this grit in it," said Sereno, who also studies sauropods. "It's exactly what we're talking about. You put your muzzle down to the ground and you're going to be incorporating these sand grits that wear your teeth down."

My OS is better than your OS - Talk Mobile

Hardware is important, there's no denying that. But without software, it doesn't matter how awesome the hardware is. It'll be a fancy paperweight. No matter how good the physical device is, if it has crappy software on it, nobody's going to care about it. Conversely, we've seen many times that excellent software can make up for crappy hardware.

The device you hold, but by and large it's the software that you interact with. It's the operating system that loads the apps, that displays your information, that connects you to the wider digital frontier. The operating system is often one and inseparable with the brand.

Software is where the real innovation happens. It's software that gives us multitasking interfaces, voice and gesture controls, notifications, and everything else. Software is what happens on our devices. The software is what defines the experience.

But what's important in software? Good features or a lot of features? Does it matter if it's open or closed source? And is the app launcher due for a revolution?

Google brings programme for nonprofits to the UK

Google has unveiled a programme aimed at the UK's charity and not-for-profit sector.

Under the Google for Nonprofits programme, announced on Tuesday, organisations can apply for free Google Apps access, as well as up to $10,000 in AdWords credits with the company.

There's also a version of YouTube for nonprofits, which comes with a 'donate now' button, product tutorials and community features available as part of the programme.

To join Google for Nonprofits, organisations will need to be registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

The programme was launched in the US in mid-2011, and England and Wales are the first countries it's been extended to since then. Elements of the programme, such as grants, are available in other regions, however.

France confirms body found in Mali is French hostage

PARIS (Reuters) - France confirmed on Monday that a body found in northern Mali was that of the French geologist Philippe Verdon, taken hostage in November 2011.

Al Qaeda's North African arm, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), said in March that it had beheaded Verdon in response to France's military intervention in Mali.

"The remains will be transferred to our country as soon as possible and autopsies will allow us to know the cause of death," President Francois Hollande said in a statement.

Hollande had said in his Bastille Day speech on Sunday that it was possible Verdon had died several weeks ago but that his death had not been officially confirmed.

France sent 3,000 troops to Mali, its former colony, in January to halt an offensive by al Qaeda-linked Islamists, ending their 10-month domination of the north of the country.

AQIM said at the end of June that eight other foreign hostages it was holding, including five French, were alive.

Court sides with Yahoo in data collection case

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Yahoo has won a court fight that could help the public learn more about the government's efforts to obtain data from Internet users.

The U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which reviews government requests to spy on individuals, ruled Monday that information should be made public about a 2008 case that ordered Yahoo Inc. to turn over customer data.

The order requires the government to review which portions of the opinion, briefs and arguments can be declassified and report back to the court by July 29.

The government sought the information from Yahoo under the National Security Agency's PRISM data-gathering program. Details of the secret program were disclosed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who has fled the U.S.

The program came to light in early June after The Washington Post and Guardian newspapers published documents provided by Snowden. It allows the NSA to reach into the data streams of U.S. companies such as Yahoo, Facebook Inc., Microsoft Corp., Google Inc. and others, and grab emails, video chats, pictures and more. U.S. officials have said the program is narrowly focused on foreign targets, and technology companies say they turn over information only if required by court order.

Yahoo requested in court papers filed June 14 to have the information about the 2008 case unsealed. A Yahoo spokeswoman hailed Monday's decision and said the company believes it will help inform public discussion about the U.S. government's surveillance programs.

The government hasn't taken a position on whether details of the case should be published as long as it's allowed to review the documents before publication in order to redact classified information, according to the court order.

Mark Rumold, a staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation specializing in electronic surveillance and national security issues, called the ruling incremental and said he was reserving judgment until the case details are actually released.

"It remains to be seen how forthcoming (the government) will be," Rumold said. "The administration has said they want a debate about the propriety of the surveillance, but they haven't really provided information to inform that debate. So declassifying these opinions is a very important place to start."

The unsealing of such secret rulings is not unprecedented, but it is rare. The last time that happened, Rumold said, was in 2002, in a case regarding the Patriot Act.

Heat on Spain PM over alleged phone texts

MADRID (AP) ? Conservative Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy faces a likely barrage of questions at a press conference after a newspaper published alleged text message exchanges between him and a jailed former party treasurer.

The leading opposition Socialist party and others have demanded Rajoy resign.

Rajoy is scheduled to face the press Monday with visiting Polish counterpart Donald Tusk.

El Mundo on Sunday published what it said were friendly text messages between Rajoy and former Popular Party treasurer Luis Barcenas.

Barcenas is at the heart of a probe into a slush fund that allegedly made payments to top party figures including Rajoy. Barcenas is to be quizzed by a judge in the case again Monday.

Rajoy has denied that he or other party figures received illegal payments.

Israel army: Syria shell lands in Golan Heights

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A mortar shell fired from Syria landed in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Sunday, Israel's army said.

"A shell was fired from Syria and hit an open area near the Israel-Syria border in the northern Golan Heights," an Israeli army spokeswoman told Ma'an.

"Initial investigations suggest the shell was a result of errant fire from Syria."

Israeli forces are searching the area and UN forces have been notified about the incident, she added.

Escalating violence against the UN Disengagement Observer Force, which monitors a 1974 truce between Israel and Syria, has seen countries recently pull out their troops.

Austria, previously the top contributor, will withdraw its 377 soldiers by the end of this month, leaving a force of 530 from the Philippines and India.

Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in 1981, in a move never recognized by the international community.

Opbeat Nets $2.7M From Facebook, Instagram Founders And More To Give Developers A Control Center For ?Web Ops?

Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 5.27.58 AMWhile it's apparently becoming easier and easier to become a developer -- judging, at least, by the number of "learn to code!" platforms popping up by the month -- the role of a lead developer and engineer within a young tech company has become increasingly demanding over the last five years. The job description now includes an expanding (and diverse) set of responsibilities. While many have focused on the consumer-side, Paul Graham recently wrote that "startups building things for other startups" (and solving their problems in a clever way) have the potential to take off in a big way given the growing pool of potential users -- in other words, other startups.

(AP) ? Thousands of daredevils have raced through Pamplona in a hair-raising running of the bulls, one day after an American and two Spaniards were gored by the beasts on the same streets.

There were no gorings on Saturday, but a crush of fallen runners blocked the entrance to the bullring, briefly stopping the bulls from entering it.

At least one person appeared to be seriously injured there, and four others were taken to hospital for cuts and bruises, said Javier Sesma, health spokesman for the province of Navarra.

The festival drew widespread attention on Friday when the American college student and two Spaniards were gored, and videos and photos of the attacks were seen around the world.

HCC SouthShore's energy camp gives students a shot of science

BY ANDREA CARROZ
Tribune correspondent

Published: July 11, 2013

Middle school minority students from Ruskin and Tampa got a shot of science this week.

Hillsborough Community College SouthShore Campus held its third annual energy camp for 30 students at Pierce and Beth Shields middle schools.

It's the first year the camp had more than 20 students enrolled, said Nina Stokes, Florida Energy Systems Consortium project manager.

Bus schedules made it harder to attract more students in the past, but a change in the camp's hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. allowed more students to attend, Stokes said.

The camp is funded through the English for Speakers of Other Languages program and teaches students about renewable resources.

Students learned about fossil fuel mining, ocean energy, windmills and created solar cookers, said camp teacher Kyla DonLevy.

"I hope it gets them excited about science and they talk to their parents and hopefully make some better choices at home," DonLevy said.

The HCC SouthShore campus uses solar panels and its buildings were constructed to be energy efficient so students can see the college practices what it preaches, Stokes said.

"It's about bringing concepts to life," she said.

On Tuesday, the students got a tour of Tampa Electric where they learned how many homes the company served and how it responded to emergencies.

Camilo Perilla, a 13-year-old student at Pierce, said he enjoyed his visit to TECO.

"It was fun because everybody was amazed," he said.

The camp serves as an opportunity for the kids to get exposed to careers and college, said Brittney Wilhelm, teacher at Pierce and the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Excel program.

Wilhelm said that most of the students plan to be first-generation college students.

The program is meant to help the students build more confidence, Stokes said.

The camp also serves as a way for the students to meet kids from other schools who experience the same struggles that they do, Wilhelm said.

"It's nice for them to see someone else doing the same thing they're doing," she said.

Lynn Vickstrom, teacher at Beth Shields and the AVID Excel program said she wants the kids to feel like a family.

She said she hopes the students "become more confident in their own ideas. That's what we teach, confidence."

Franco Aleman, a 13-year-old student from Pierce, said he's learned a lot from the camp and hopes to apply what he learned in his science class when he starts school in the fall.

"This camp has let me understand what kinetics is and I think it's going to help me with my science," Aleman said.

Washington Redskins Name Debate Should Stay Out of U.S. House

Daniel Snyder

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

You had the feeling that once Washington Redskins? owner Daniel Snyder uttered the word ?never? when talking about changing his team?s nickname, that he just might re-fuel a debate. People don?t like when words like ?never? get thrown around, it just sounds so final and defiant.

Most football fans agree that the nickname isn?t ideal, but that it?s certainly not meant in negative way towards Native Americans. The majority of Washington fans still want to keep the nickname according to the latest polls, but now there?s mounting pressure from outside sources to banish it.

U.S. House Representative Eni F.H. Faleomavaega feels very strongly that ?Redskins? should go. He had this to say in Wednesday?s House session:

?Mr. Speaker, it?s time the National Football League and the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, face the reality that the continued use of the word ?Redskin? is unacceptable. It is a racist, derogatory term, and patently offensive to Native Americans.?

He went on to say that once the American people learn how offensive the term really is, that they?ll understand why it can?t ever be used again.

This latest opinion from the U.S. House really goes to show how big of an issue this is becoming. I can and can?t believe that it?s still in place in 2013, just because of how PC everything else has become. The reality is that unless you?re a Native American, which the vast majority of people in this county are not, you really don?t know how if feels to hear that word.

It?s a very tricky debate, but I believe the House should stay out of it. They simply have better things to worry about than pro football nicknames. This is ultimately an issue that should be settled between the NFL, Daniel Snyder and Native American representatives. These are the three sides that must be involved, and if one side isn?t happy with the nickname, it must go.

Just how long that will take to happen? I doubt the name makes it another 10 years?

Italian Matteo Trentin wins stage 14 of Tour

LYON, France (AP) ? Italian cyclist Matteo Trentin won Saturday's hilly 14th stage of the Tour de France in a perfectly-timed sprint finish.

Overall leader Chris Froome and the other main contenders were several minutes back when Trentin crossed the finish line in Lyon. Froome was safely in the main pack.

Julien Simon was looking to become the first Frenchman to win a stage on this year's race but was caught by a handful of riders with about one kilometer to go.

As they contested the sprint, Trentin was near the back but surged forward to beat Swiss rider Michael Albasini by half a wheel length.

Hands on: Westinghouse’s WhiteBoard is an 84-inch Windows 8 LED monitor (and 4K TV)

What would you do with an 84-inch computer monitor with 4K UltraHD resolution?

Westinghouse Digital, a company better known for making high-definition televisions than PCs, is branching out into the interactive whiteboard business with massive PC-TV hybrids that understand touch. Although an LED WhiteBoard makes more sense inside classrooms and boardrooms than your home, the company is open to the idea of offering the device to consumers, as long as they don?t mind ponying up $16,000 for the bragging rights ($15,000 if you don?t need the built-in PC that powers the 4K screen) ? and have the space for it.

We got a chance to see this 84-inch WhiteBoard up close, so scroll on down to see what we think.

It?s practically an interactive wall

First of all, you can?t help but notice the LED 4K Monitor?s size: it?s huge and makes you feel tiny when standing next to it ? the 38.5-inch InFocus Mondopad has nothing on this beast. Unlike a big-screen HDTV where you?d step as far back as possible to take in all the screen, you need to stand pretty close to this WhiteBoard to use its touchscreen, which makes you feel as if? you?re playing with an interactive wall rather than just a monitor.

To make touch possible on such a large surface, Westinghouse uses its proprietary Infrared Touch rather than the capacitive technology that is in your mobile devices. What this means is the WhiteBoard uses IR cameras hidden along the edge of the screen that track the location and movement of your fingers, so it can understand your touch controls. You (and another user) can use up to six fingers at the same time to zoom in, out, and to poke at the virtual keyboard. For example, we were able to doodle on the WhiteBoard with our finger, while another Westinghouse representative used his hand to capture screenshots. The WhiteBoard?s touch system felt responsive to our gestures: we didn?t notice any significant lag in the brief time we were playing with the device.

WhiteBoard app?

Since the point of the demo was to show off the WhiteBoard?s touch features ? rather than its 4K UltraHD, 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution LED screen with 178 degree (vertical and horizontal) viewing angles ? we didn?t get to watch any 4K sample reels to check out its screen. Instead, we got to play with the company?s own WhiteBoard app that runs on top of Windows 8 (you can also opt for Windows 7).

Westinghouse Whiteboard toolbar

You can access the basic WhiteBoard touch features from Desktop mode, which, as you can see in the photo, looks just like a vertical toolbox. Say you want to scribble some notes about a webpage; all you have to do is select the pencil tool on the toolbox before you start your annotations.

If you want to do much more than just highlight some text with the basic tools, you can use the full-featured WhiteBoard app. To make the WhiteBoard particularly useful for meetings and for school, the app lets you set different backgrounds like blank sheet music for music class, or blank field-of-play diagrams for coaches to call plays.

Westinghouse Whiteboard demo

You can also import and edit photos, create stamps of shapes, and type out text and math formulas so that they?re neater than just your chicken scratches.

Westinghouse Whiteboard_app options-2

There?s a PC in here

Westinghouse Whiteboard ports-2Behind the gigantic 84-inch screen is a little PC with a third-generation Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM (expandable to 8GB), a 500GB hard drive, Wi-Fi (not 802.11ac), an Ethernet port, 6 USB ports, as well as dual HDMI and VGA-outs to make it easy to connect the WhiteBoard with other audio visual equipment. The whole setup is surprisingly compact, and you can hardly tell that there?s a computer inside unless you peak in the back.

If you?re willing to make do with a smaller display that offers just 1080p HD resolution, a 70-inch WhiteBoard can be had for $8,000. A 65-inch and 55-inch option are also available for $7,000 and $5,000, respectively. You can even knock $1,000 off these prices if you choose to go without an integrated computer and just hook up your own PC to the WhiteBoard via HDMI.

The WhiteBoard is definitely geared more?for school and meetings than for homes, but it?s not too much of a stretch to imagine such a large touchscreen PC-TV hybrid taking over your family room or basement for gaming. We?re already seeing 20-plus-inch all-in-one computers and tablets geared for homes, so why not a gigantic 84-incher? These Westinghouse WhiteBoards won?t be available until this fall, and we could possibly see smaller models with more family-friendly price tags coming to our homes in the near future.

Baseball union head assails leaks on drug inquiry

NEW YORK (AP) ? The head of the players' union said Thursday baseball's drug agreement could be undermined by leaks to the media about whether players are cooperating with an investigation by the commissioner.

Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun are among the players being interviewed as part of Major League Baseball's inquiry into Biogenesis, a closed Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs.

"Repeated leaks threaten to harm the integrity" of the drug agreement, union executive director Michael Weiner said in a statement. He added that the leaks "call into question the required level of confidentiality needed to operate a successful prevention program."

Braun is among several players who refused to answer questions about their dealings with Biogenesis, which was first reported Wednesday by ESPN and the Daily News of New York. Braun was interviewed last month and Rodriguez is scheduled to be interviewed Friday.

"The players want a clean game and they demand a testing program that is not only the toughest in professional sports, but one that guarantees each player due process rights accompanied by strict confidentiality provisions," Weiner said.

The union said it has no information about the source of the leaks or any indication that MLB is the source.

MLB has spent most of the year investigating about 20 players for their links to Biogenesis, including Rodriguez and Braun, both former MVPs. Miami New Times reported in January the clinic had distributed banned drugs to major leaguers.

Braun and Rodriguez have said they didn't do anything that merits discipline.

MLB aims to complete the player interviews in mid-July, but is not sure whether it will meet that schedule. Management then will have to decide on possible discipline, which is likely to be challenged in grievances before an arbitrator.

"It would be unfortunate if anyone prejudged the results of the investigation based on unsubstantiated leaks that are a clear violation of the JDA," Weiner said, referring to baseball's joint drug agreement.

Rodriguez has said he used performance-enhancing drugs while with Texas from 2001-03 but has denied using them since.

Braun's 50-game suspension was overturned last year by an arbitrator who ruled the Milwaukee star's urine sample was mishandled by the drug collector.

It can be quite helpful to utilize site wide links. This links can be seen on every page of the website and can always link the user back to the same page. Some typical ways to use a site-wide link would be to navigate a user to a contact page or the page where they place orders. Director says Jackson's condition frightened him

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The director of Michael Jackson's ill-fated comeback concerts told a jury on Wednesday that he was frightened when Jackson was shivering and seemed lost at one of his final rehearsals for the "This Is It" shows.

The rehearsal occurred six days before Jackson died in June 2009, Kenny Ortega testified during a negligence lawsuit filed by Jackson's mother against AEG Live LLC, the promoter of the concerts.

"I saw a Michael that frightened me," Ortega said, calling Jackson's appearance "very, very troubling."

Jackson wasn't coherent when he arrived that day but improved somewhat as the night went on, Ortega said. The singer didn't rehearse that night ? the first time the director recalled seeing him after numerous missed rehearsals.

Court proceedings were briefly recessed when Ortega broke down while reading an email he sent to the CEO of AEG Live LLC hours after the rehearsal in which he described Jackson as a "lost boy." The singer's mother Katherine Jackson also appeared to cry during the proceedings.

Ortega said he was trying to alert AEG Live officials about Jackson's condition and trusted them to get the singer appropriate care.

Instead, Ortega said he was confronted by Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, during a tense meeting the following day. Ortega said Murray assured him and AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips that Jackson was capable of rehearsing.

Ortega also recalled that Phillips didn't speak up during the meeting, which he left after about 15 minutes.

The director said on cross-examination that he believed Phillips and another top executive, Paul Gongaware, cared for Jackson. "I felt they loved him," Ortega said, adding that he doesn't think that sentiment has changed since they were sued by Katherine Jackson.

Jackson's mother is suing AEG Live, claiming the company missed warning signs about her son's health and failed to properly investigate the doctor later convicted of involuntary manslaughter after giving the singer an overdose of the anesthetic propofol.

AEG denies it hired Murray. The company also says there was no way it could have known the doctor was giving Jackson propofol as a sleep aid.

Ortega also said Jackson appeared to be under the influence of a substance on at least four occasions when he did attend rehearsals. Jackson's state was "fairly obvious" to others involved in the production, he said.

He told jurors that he sent the email describing Jackson's poor condition during the rehearsal to Phillips to suggest the singer needed professional help. He also said that based on Jackson's condition, he didn't believe the "This Is It" shows could go forward, but he hoped there would be a turnaround.

The director said he repeatedly called Murray that night, and his only concern was for Jackson's health. Ortega and Jackson worked on two previous concert tours and had been friends for years.

"I tried the doctor who I thought would be the most natural person" to help, Ortega said. "Then I reached out to AEG, Michael's partners, to make sure they were aware of how I felt and what I saw."

Jurors hearing the case have heard about Jackson's inability to rehearse from other witnesses, but Ortega was the highest-ranking tour worker to testify at the civil trial and had the most direct contact with AEG executives and Jackson.

Ortega said it was the only concert he had ever worked on where he had to coordinate a rehearsal schedule with a performer's doctor and concert promoter.

Drawing deeply and candidly on her own experiences, the author illuminates her thought-provoking positions on such issues as beauty and age, relationships and sex, children and careers, and the reassurance and reassertion of the feminine in a patriarchal society. Cutting across class, race, religion, and gender, A WOMAN'S WORTH speaks powerfully and persuasively to a generation in need of healing, and in search of harmony. Breaking Through: Catholic Women Speak for ThemselvesBreaking Through: Catholic Women Speak for ThemselvesCatholic women are some of the most maligned, most caricatured, and most intriguing people in American society.

America is flirting with the idea that being a Catholic female means saying "yes" to the faith as a private source of comfort, but "no" to living out its more countercultural moral and social teachings.
Catholic women are facing unprecedented questions about sex, money, marriage, work, children and the church itself -- questions with innumerable personal and societal repercussions. Is it even possible that the teachings of a 2,000 year old religion are still relevant for today's toughest issues?

A quick tour of leading cultural indicators seems to say "no." But this is far from the whole story. Many women, courageously facing questions their mothers and grandmothers would never have encountered, are finding intellectually and spiritually satisfying answers within the framework of their Catholic faith.

Nine such Catholic women -- varying widely in age, occupation and experience -- share personal stories of how they struggled toward the realization that the demands of their faith actually set them free. Their stories -- full of honesty, but ultimately hope -- shed new light and new clarity on women's continued attraction to the Catholic faith.

Tongue In Asia, the extended tongue was a sign of life-force as the tongue between the lips imitated the sacred lingam-yoni: male within female genital. Sticking out the tongue is still a polite sign of greeting in northern India and Tibet (see Body Parts).

Cosmic Egg In ancient times the primeval universe-or the Great Mother-took the form of an egg. It carried all numbers and letters within an ellipse, to show that everything is contained within one form at the beginning (see Round and Oval Motifs).
